Aquaria Crashing on Windows on startup

Hi,

I haven't been able to play the game on Windows. It starts like really really laggy, then it crashes.

I've been lurking around but haven't found a solution, any suggestions?

Only thing I noticed was alt-tabing out of game caused very bad lags/tearings. Had to restart game to fix it. So that is one thing to avoid. What OS are you on? I played on my lappy with Win xp sp3 without any issues, expect that minimizing/alt-tabing + 1 big crash of game itself after double clicking the Recipes button ingame. Maybe dissabling steam overlay might help, or running game in compatibility mode.

I tried both disabling steam overlay, and running in compatibility mode, and neither worked. The game still crashes :(

I'm on Windows 8.

Oh, haven't tried Win 8 with Aquaria, but chances are that the game is not optimised for it at all (judging by game's last update was long time ago)...thats why I thought about compatibility mode set to XP or Vista. No idea then mate, sorry. I would check then their forums to see, if anyone having troubles with crashes on Win 8. Or standard things like checking games integrity, checking game's folder for any error reports, then fresh reinstall, graphics drivers, net framework update/repair, direct x check, etc.

Edit: In game folder, there is file named debug.log. Try to open it with notepad, Word or some other text editor to see, if there is any error posted. You might try to back it up/rename it and create blank debug.log, then try to run game and afterwards check it for possible errors. This way it wouldn't be too long to read and possibly making it easier to find the reason why it crashes for you.

Thanks for your help. I'll had to play it on a Mac at work for the time being. I got it from Humble Bundle, but haven't tried their installer on Windows, only Steam.

I'm having the exact same issue. I'm using Windows 8. I didn't have this problem with the local (non-steam) version running on Windows 7. I'm not sure if it's Steam or W8.

Hmm, try False.Genesis' open source builds? It doesn't do Steam achievements, but since you can't get it running on Steam anyway, that's not a big loss. Plus, it has updated code. http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=4313.0
