Space Hulk maps are tight and claustrophobic, with little room to even walk past each other. XCOM maps are larger and rely on cover and flanking moves by your soldiers. Space Hulk is more like a tactical riddle - You have less options than XCOM but must achieve your objectives by taking risks, but ensure they are the *right* risks.
Space Hulk is nothing BUT tactical combat. XCOM has other management jobs wrapped around it.
I play XCOM but I love Space Hulk!
Overall, these 2 games have nothing in common really and are 2 totally completely different games.
Fair enough, this has no base strategy layer, but what about the main gameplay itself? Which is more fun? Which has lesser bugs, more variety etc?
On the flip side, it is however a lot of fun, and a good translation of he tabletop Space Hulk game. Which is a good thing.
Again, I am scared hearing of tabletop. Is it more tabletop, or videogame? And frankly, is there a good chance Xcom fans might like this?
I just don't want to end up getting this and feeling like it's "too heavy".
Xcom gives you more squadbuilding options, here you have to fight with what you get. If you like it or not. Xcom gives you the chance to retreat in Space Hulk you are under constant pressure. The enemy dont wait (smart players do in pvp) but the KI attacks in a constant row of claws and teeth. If you made a failure with your Squadsetup in a small passage you can be sure you lost a few Terminator.
Now tell us, is that a game for you? :)
Single player is ok, but the game is really more interesting to play against human players.
I think that you have to like boardgames & tabletop games to prefer SH over XCOM (but hey there is many boardgamey stuff in XCOM).
Since your idea of fun will likely be different than anyone elses it is tough to give a solid assessment of that question. I find Space Hulk fun because of the question of success generated by a D6 dice roll. You might not. It'll be up to you to decide that part. XCOM has a similar level of randomness, but the percentages are initially skewed in the player's favor, and choices the player makes affect them. In Space Hulk, the decision on placement is more important to mission progression than it is to individual shots.
As for the gameplay: it is a very straightforward game. The tactics are all about line of sight, placement and method of advancement rhough the individual maps. The rules are short and sweet, with variants only for a few weapon types. So it is similar to early-game XCOM in that respect, but does not become more complex as you acquire new "toys" to play with in XCOM. So once you establish a knowledge base of the rules, that's all you have to need worry about.
Basically, Space Hulk is lighter fare for when you want to think, but you don't want to have to manage every little detail.
Space Hulk is simply play once a week type of game , or else you get bored with it really fast.
Offcourse some people want to play forever , but there is no reason to play forever in this game.
Cause there is no attachement , no growth , no new tactics other then RNG once you learned it all .
Sorry if you like Space Hulk for what it is , a perfect table top conversion , for on the move, once in a while playing reminding you of the old times .
Game is perfect , if you do not know Space Hulk , you might get irritated cause it is a D6 product , D6 have a lot of limitations . cause a lot of things doesn´t make sense unless you know Space Hulk .
We shall see if the fangs of the wolves brings some additional attachement or not .
I do hope so , so but for the small core of people who love Space Hulk the game is already done.
Space Hulk, however, I've played on the desktop, and now playing it all again on iOS and still enjoying it. So personally Space Hulk has been much better value for money.
But it's a response thing. Do you like the long strategy of Xcom, or the changing tactics of Space Hulk where the dice is as much your enemy as the aliens?
Maybe the devs should have invested more love in the MP features, to instead present the game as a solid MP PvP game experience that offer a optional SP mode.
MP lately if you haven´t notice it , thrives on investment >.< people do not like fairplay anymore.
Name one shootemup (which at point was all about reflexes and skill ) doesn´t have levelup , different unlocks etc .
Making space hulk more MP requires a tons of rework , when xcom MP isn´t that successfull either , or bloodbowl or any other TBS multiplayer game .
Remember MP games are the one thing social medium totally got wrong .
You can nowadays knock off 75% of your starting MP population .
So if your MP start at 1 million you would lucky to be able to keep 250k .
Too many MP games coming out , and everybody wants to keep the same cut of the pie .
Space hulk need some MP improvements , but those affect singleplayer straight away .
Different aliens , different chapters etc .
People (most) always start with single player , before they go into multiplayer mode . to learn the mechanics (get advangetage ) .
So offcourse multiplayer needs updates and regular updates to keep it going .
Something I don´t think this DEV can keep giving especially with low returns on investment .
Too succesfull MP games requires a dedicated anti hackers group .
Something most Publisher do not care about (blizzard being one of the few who do believe in fairplay ) .
MP sounds great , but brings a lot of work , singleplayer is easier to sell and then tag on a optional MP system .
MP system example on IOS is P2W market , something a lot of people want .
Why cause they want P2W to spent money , but sadly they also want a hack free envoirement , something that is harder to achieve .
