Why pay to play?
I'm downloading the game now, and I was wondering if anyone had a reason to pay for the subscription right off the bat, rather then going free to play. I'm new to MMOs btw

I'd suggest paying later. I'm only starting myself, but other than a few classes, you can access anything low level easily. lvl 13, and haven't seen a single moment where it required money so far.

The most important things that you need to pay for are DLC packs that are on the sale now, however all of them give you something post level 30(which is actually pretty easy to hit) http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=120338974
Also there is subscription option if you want the stuff like more inventory slots, bank slots, unlimited cash limit and 500 SC(game marketplace currency) every month https://www.dcuniverseonline.com/free/

Wait into your level 30 or you can get in now and get new powers such as earth, lightning, and light the green laturn power.

Honestly? No, there isn't a reason to pay right off the bat. Play for a while, make a couple characters, make some characters just to see what it's like playing them. Hit the level cap, see how comfortable you can get in the game. When all is said and done, and you've figured out if you really do like the game or not, then yes, absolutely go pay-to-play.

I can't find a reason to. I just buy the DLC packs at 75% off or more and am only missing two of them. Really the way P2P is handled in DCUO is perfect. DCUO, LOTRO and STO are the only P2P games that I can actually enjoy without spending money on them.

Much better than the Everquest games and The Old Republic, that charge you to wear the gear you find... Yeah...

Exactly. It's the reason I stopped playing TOR, (The other reason being the boring gameplay. The writing being a few points in TOR's favor, though) that I had to pay for stuff that had, previously, just been given to me, like the basic style options. (Aligning colors and hiding your helmet, for instance)

DCUO, though, you can get tons of fun out of without paying a dime. I still recommend paying some dimes here and there, though.

The biggest disadvantage I've found is not the number of inventory slots , but the limited access to in game currency. You're capped at 2000 and the rest goes into escrow. This essentially makes the whole auction house portion of the game closed to subscribers and I would imagine end game would not be fun at all without subscribing.

That being said there's tons and tons of content and I haven't had any problem leveling with drops I found and purchases off vendors.

If you pay $5 you can get all of your escrow back for a full week.
