got the same issue. If you go into the "overworld map" that shows the Radio Tower etc then back and scroll with your mouse to the upper right (fixed: said left by mistake) corner you should get a "pocket" in the darkness that is Ranger HQ.
I'm experiencing the same symptoms - though in far more instances than just the world map. Aside from the bug mentioned by Ye genteel sire, the black "discovery fog" sticks around even after portions of the overworld map have been explored. This is especially bad when exploring or traveling next to mountains, as you find yourself trying to negotiate around these pockets of black that simply won't disappear.
This problem exists in more than just the overworld map. The screen will go completely black if the player camera is centered on an area that is deemed to be just outside the "playable" bounds. This bug is absolutely crippling in areas like the Central Basement. As soon as the player loads in, the UI elements are still present, but the playable map is completely black. This makes completing the Ag Center unnecessarily difficult for people who have this problem.
Edit: I'm experiencing the same problems on an Intel GPU. I may open a separate thread to track this problem for Intel GPUs if Clearer's suggestion is working for NVIDIA GPU owners.
Edit: This is definetly a bug in the closed source drivers. Dropping the drivers nvidia allows me to play the game just fine -- except when in beautiful. The drivers are not good enough for that setting. Also the game crashed on the first map transition when in beautiful. No problems so far in fast.
Just an addtional FYI: I'm running Fedora which is slightly more standards conformant than Ubuntu when it comes to a lot things. Just to verify that it's not an actual problem with Ubuntu, could anyone having problems with the game on Ubuntu, try the game on something other than a debian based distro (take your pick)?
Regardless of how I fixed the problem though, since (I have been told by devs) the game has been optimized for closed source drivers, the bug should be fixed in the game and a user should not rely on hacks or workarounds. Bad bug considering it wasn't present in the beta :-(
OP: Could you change the title of the thread to something a tiny bit more descriptive, like, say "[Linux] Black world map"?
My grapic card is Intel® HD Graphics 4400.
As it works with 'non-prprietary' NVidia driver, probably both Mesa-intel and nvidia-prop implementing some extension which is 'misused' by game. So it should be possible to figure out which by gradually turning them on/off.
Lagoon has described a similar problem, however it is not identical. He is able to interact with world objects and also has problems in the local maps, where he can get some graphics going by moving the camera. Please verify that you are not suffering from the same problems he does.
gb -- can you get a list of extensions available in both cases?
This are the lists:
