Neither game is a roguelike, but both have some roguelike elements in them. Can't say with certainty which one is better, but Spelunky seems way more challenging and thus more fun and entertaining.
Yeah I have both and i would DEFINATELY say that Spelunky is better imo
Both are great games, but I think Spelunky is the better of the two and has more replay value.

I still recommend getting botth, but I'd personally prioritize getting Spelunky before Rogue Legacy.

Yeah I've edited my question as you're right in saying they aren't really roguelikes. Thanks!

Cool why do you think that?

Thanks for your help!
I'd say Spelunky gives you much more of a pure roguelike expierience. Rogue Legacy is more of a grind and a chore early on. Both are great fun, but to me, Spelunky has a more longevity and consistant fun. You have to hone in your skills rather than grind for upgrades.

Ah I see. Thanks for your help!
i have both games and rogue legacy i have all unlocked reached lvl 507(max lvl) and now i don't have more fun playing it, but spelunky has more replayability.
Personally, I would say you'd enjoy Spelunky more. I do.

The great thing I have found about Spelunky is that I don't even have to be progressing or winning consistently to enjoy it. I just like being in the world & traversing the stages. I can not say the same about Rogue Legacy.

I've played 54 hours of Spelunky in less than 6 days. I am just absolutely addicted. I'm having such a nice time playing & listening to podcasts.
Spelunky is far, far better designed and will probably last you much longer, especially if you don't like grinding.

I got bored of Rogue Legacy fairly quickly, although the time I had with it was fun. Spelunky on the other hand just doesn't get old.
I love them both, but Spelunky wins.
both are fantastic, if you want to save, wait for next sales :)
I don't even think we would have Rogue Legacy if it hadn't been for Spelunky, something I also think the creator of Rogue Legacy admits by having a "Spelunker" role added.

Anyway: I've played ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of Rogue Legacy and it's definitely a grreat game, however once you reach +4/+5 difficulty (and above) and have all stats maxed out, it becomes rather dull because the only way to upgrade your stats is through fairy chests which supercedes challenges that aren't randomized to the same degree as the castle rooms are.

In terms of which game is more challenging: When it comes to single completion, definitely Spelunky, but overall, Rogue Legacy is definitely a far more difficult game, why? Because it never ends (= no fixed difficulty), whenever you beat the game it one-ups you on the difficulty and increases the monster levels significantly, something which becomes more and more of a daunting task since your stat upgrades can't keep up in the least anymore.

Thankfully, any selections of games aren't mutually exclusive, so play both!

Yeah, Spelunky basically started the trend of combining roguelike elements with other genres. Edmund McMillen has said that there'd be no Binding of Isaac without Spelunky.
