Tips, Finer Points, and "Easter Eggs" to the Game- Please add any you find!
Here are some of the basic things I found out in my first hour of playing the game (two player)
  • You can hold down the attack button to change up the sword swing. I'm not entirely sure what this does yet since the game moves so quick its hard to tell.
[8] Swords can deflect bullets; its fun to play hot potato with a second player. (Like that trolley car in Rampage if anyone remembers.)
  • When swords clash one person can be sent flying. They'll bounce around the walls for a bit before regaining control.
  • Hitting or shooting walls enough will turn them into spikes. You can completely ruin a level by doing this, and hilarity will ensue.
  • Some levels have different variations to the rules; one in fortress lets you change the direction of the moving walls by shooting them, or delaying them with sword swings.
  • The Showdown stages are hands down amazing, there needs to be a way to play these from the start. Cemetery in paticular is extremely heart pounding.
  • Pressing up and down on the character select can change the outfit of the character
  • If you press and hold jump and then quickly swing up, you can jump super high. Good for getting above people or out of a pit.
  • While holding down on the ground, you can fake death and hide amongst corpses. This also works on CPUs, but isn't too great in two person versus.
  • Touching water ruins your gun for that life and you can't shoot even with 3 bullets left
  • If you fake your death in water, you eventually drown.

Additionally, If you hold down in mid air and swing your sword downwards, you will drop extremely fast. The timing is tough, but it can also get you out of some tough situations. I believe you have to be moving down already, but I'm not sure about that.

I was wondering if playing dead would work against the AI. Hadn't tried it yet, because I didn't want to die. Thanks for the tips and nice to see some people actually enjoying the game. All the complaining was getting tiresome

Three cool things:
- You can slice the grass with your slashes. It's a cool subtle detail
- You'll be damaged or do damage different depending on where you strike (decapitations if you manage to strike at the head area)
- You can deflect bullets in different directions. For example, an enemy shot at me from above and I deflected to the left and killed another enemy

Reading all that, I'm intrigued by how much underlying depth there is to it. That's what I love about games that go for the minimalist approach - it allows the detail to be focussed elsewhere in more subtle places. I'm subscribing to this thread just in case any more pop up.
Thanks for the tip about drowning, I tried that but wasn't patient enough. Samurai can hold their breaths pretty well (...8 seconds or so). I put it in my guide: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=203012803

Nice. I'm favouriting that guide for when I eventually get the game.

i've been trying to figure out what the fancy sword swing you get when you hold down the attack button can be used for. as far as i can tell it only acts as a shorter range normal slice. it will still clang with an enemy strike and deflect bullets, but only reaches one space unlike the normal strike which reaches 2 spaces. the timing and short range makes it much less useful for attacking other than as a humiliating way to kill an opponent.

HOWEVER there is some actual use to it when your fighting more experienced or advanced matches, there is slightly less down time after the short strike, meaning you can follow it up with a normal strike faster than you normally could which actually has been of some use. if you can successfully time it to block an attack you can strike the enemy faster than they can return. also one of my roommates got really good at staying out of my strike zone until after i miss and then hitting me between strikes in showdowns, and its useful to sort of fake him out and follow it with the real attack.

also the turning spike into walls thing only works on the forest levels as far as i can tell

Some more cool little details:
- Decapitated heads float and sway in water
- Killing an enemy in water causes the water to be stained pink for a few seconds

Little things like that really make the experience and combat that much more special

- decapitating the blue guy with the raiden hat will send the hat flying and you will see a blonde head rolling around

This is very helpful, thanks so much!

Because I love the sheath attack so much, I've found a few interesting things with about it. Thedryness you are correct, it's primarily a means to prime up for a quick a draw, though I like using it primarily as a means to kill my foes (I feel like such a badass doing it).

If you immediately push & hold the slash button right as the sheath move occurs, you can do another sheath move without having to do a primary slash. The timing is a little tricky but I've managed to pull off three sheathes in a row.
Also, while you are holding slash in the attempt to pull off the sheathing, you can still fire your gun, meaning you can pull off some stealthy & swift kills if you execute it all right & the opponent manages to avoid the initial slash & bullet.

It is also interesting to note that wall jumping physics are different when you simply push jump against a wall without holding a directional key. You will be propelled further in the opposite direction. With some mastery & discipline all of these subtle things can be a useful assets in your arsenal.
