Keyboard controls thread.
Original post:
Let's be frank here. This game was not made with a keyboard and mouse in mind. I mean "up" for fire - really? + no mouse support outside of menu screen. And it never tells you which button does what when you start a game, not very helpful I gotta say. (enemies found you? good luck finding fire button among 100+ keys)

Yes, you can rebind the controls, but no matter how you look at it, keyboard controls are just clunky. It's same as playing on an emulator - not very enjoyable.

So if you have a controller - yeah, this game is quite fun. But playing with a keyboard is very frustrating and not recommended.
It would be better if this was mentioned at store page of course. Well, shrug.

EDIT:
I'm gotta admit that I was wrong. It's quite playable. With few problems, but playable way more than I thought yesterday.
Problems are - while using "hold" button on a keyboard - you can't actually shoot in specific direction, and controlling movement of your character is way easier with a analog stick. But yeah, it's playable.
I kinda don't get an argument that it easier to spam attack button by a keyboard , at least for lowlevel ranger it's not revelant.

I find the keyboard controls just fine.

That's simply just not true. I re-mapped my keys and there's really nothing clunky about it. Sounds like you don't care enough to try and enjoy the game.

It's not a twin-stick shooter, it doesn't need mouse support. It reminds me of the glory days of Apogee, back when Commander Keen was king and Duke Nukem was 2d. What was the one side-scroller with the kid that had a slingshot? Oh and the one where you were a wizard and shot lightning bolts? I need to dig out my old cd collection (I backed up my floppies thankfully).

The idea of palying Gauntlet with mouse support is silly. If you expected to know the keys on the keyboard without looking at the the bindings, that's also silly. That's how you know what keys do what. If you don't like the keys they are bound to, rebind them, you're already on the binding page anyway!

If you're looking for a control complaint, complain about the fact that in local games, if player 2 is in the store, player 1 can move the store cursor around, potentially causing misbuys.

Really, rebinding your keys is not clunky at all. I play with both an arcade stick and the keyboard off and on, and do just as well with either.
Just rebind the keys, lol.

I disagree completely, the controls are fine if you rebind them, infact i can slash way faster spamming the attack button on my keyboard as opposed to xbox 360 joystick..

in most games including this one.
1 hit escape
2 chose the controls menu
3 click the configure button
4 voilla, you now know which button to press to do what and even more impressively you can actually change the buttons you press to different ones

the keys make sense. the classic pc config of wasd and then the arrow keys for fire buttons. I switch my strafe key to shift and hold to space as it's more natural.

Well, that's quite a one sided response.

After reading all your comments I gave another try with a keyboard. Aaaand I'm gotta admit that I was wrong. It's quite playable. With few problems, but playable way more than I thought yesterday.

I'm playing on a pc for like 15 years already or so, and I played a ton of various games with keyboard only controls, and I still think this game is little clunky with them. They are better then I thought yesterday, but not perfect by any means. (from recent games UnEpic has quite perfect keyboard controls, it's just a joy to play.)

Still I was wrong, so I'm gonna edit original post.

I did the same thing. Works well for me. I actually use strafe pretty regularly now.

Its more a case of why not have mouse as an option. I'm hating this, why have arrows as binds in stead of the mouse, my hand is already on my mouse, and all other games use the mouse, why do I need 2 hands on the damn keyboard. then switch back to mouse for menu or when I tab out.

Its just like, why not let use bind the mouse. I simply do not like having to have 2 hands on the keyboard when I shouldn't have to, it feels unnatural for a game, and like others have said it feels like I'm playing an emulator.

I'd also like it if multi-key bindings were allowed, then I could have everything bound for my left hand. But noooo ofc it doesn't support that.

Theres the OPTION to rebind, so give us the OPTION to use a mouse.

Hello, I want to get this game for steam but I have a MAME and one of the keybindings is the ENTER key. Is there any way to disable this in game? I've seen the game on a friends machine and we could not disable the ENTER key for chat. This leaves us with one character that chats rather than moving upwards. I could reconfigure my MAME but this setup works with dozens of other games so I would rather not.

I actually prefer the keyboard controls over joystick controls mainly because it just feels better. I tried both with a ranger and can't seem to enjoy a 360 controller on this game (and i'm usually very adamant about 360 controls on most games like this).
