Access to non-steam version
I assume that purchasing the steam version only entitles one to the steam version? On my laptop for example, it would be preferable to have access to a version that doesn't require steam?

Yes, you can link a retail version to Steam but not the other way around. You can use it with Steam in offline mode though on your laptop.
