Is there anyway to save certain party member, or is it set in stone?

If they can't be saved than I am not a happy bunny, not a happy bunny at all.

I didn't lose any party members around the time I met Esteban... I did lose some on different occasions, but always got them back.

I haven't played far into Mexico, but I've never lost a party member permanently.

Did you finish the objective? You only lose them if you don't get there in time.

I got there in plenty of time but Esteban always cut's them down.

I am not going any further until I find out if I have gone wrong.

when you arrive in time there's various dialogue to be made with esteban. In some occasion he kills the hostage, in other occasions he just wounds the hostage and after the coming battle the hostage itself comes back in your team but must be cured.

I was able to save her, if you are talking about that translator girl. She did gain the "traumatized" trait though.

If esteban kills or just wounds her is readable in the right low corner of the screen, written in yellow. If you attack esteban right away she dies. If you talk to him and try to convince him to let her go she just get wounded. All happens before the battle.

First playthough my follower just died since I didn't get there in time :)

It's no biggie though, you get some other followers later. If no one ever dies you actually get way more followers than you actually need, and then you'll have to keep feeding them...

Oddly enough my food income has been scaling with the amount of people in my party.

Once I added two new members, I started getting more meat than was possible before.
