Hopefully you'll still feel the same when the game is over.
And... thanks for buying it on GOG. We get more money that way ;)
The writings in this game was impeccable and it was what contributed most to my appreciation of this great RPG. Characters are very well written and dialogues were spot on that I was completely immersed in the experience. Although each character had only a handful number of individual events, you somehow managed to make each individual stand out and brim over with personalities.
I normally don't like turn based combats because they are unskippable and get in the way of storytelling. However, Expeditions: Conquistador gave every battle in the game related story and because of that I found battles exiting. (plus the genius retreat button!)
I also loved how choices are not parallel mirror of one another with just different characters and the same reward. Variability in consequence of choices gives this game a strong re-playability.
Expeditions: Conquistador is one of very few games I have absolutely no complaints but tons of good things to talk about. (though I wish there were more character specific events!) I regret that the game is relatively unknown(I wouldn't have heard of this game if it weren't for a random youtube comment mentioning it) to gamers despite the game's superb quality. This game deserves GOTY in my book, at least.
I'm going to get as many of my gaming friends as possible to play this game. This is undoubtedly the best RPG I've ever played in years. Thank you again for making this game. I look forward to whatever games you produce in the future.
Cuallitonalli! Buena Suerte!
Congrats to the devs for this game, its really fantastic.
The storytelling and writing were good, as was the roleplaying flavour through character interactions and even camping. Clearly a lot of work was put into it and it really shows.
Also cant forget to mention the Art and Music, which were also really superb.
I also really loved how the game really made you think about your decision in the dialog boxes and how they would effect the upcoming battles/situation. You could really succeed or fail based on those choices.
Im also one of the people who normally doesnt enjoy turn based games on this scale, but the battles were done really well. They are also very challenging, some of the battles can be really trial and error until you find the right strategy.
I had the AI damage on 0.8 and the AI skill on max, which suited my preferences.
Probably died the most on the Fort Defence mission, 18 vs 6 until i realised i could get the most cannon damage off funnelling them into a long 2 width corridor. Really brutal mission.
Only complaint i have is that some of the abilities were a bit annoying, especially that archer ability that doesnt require LOS (hailstorm i think)
When you get 4-5 archers together doing it, it renders a lot of your careful planning and chokepoints pretty pointless.
Everything can be countered in this game.
-Avoid sticking together if you can.
-If forced to stick, use the guard ability (veteran lvl soldiers).
-When making your moves, keep in mind that hailstorm have a limited range of 10.
Im aware of the counters to it, ive used them in the lead up to battles.
In large battles, its difficult if not impossible to use them however.
For example, in the 18 vs 6 battle.
If you dont stick together, you cant funnel and chokepoint troops, which will easily lead to you being surrounded.
You cannot always use the gaurd ability as your troops are often too busy on the frontline.
Hailstorm has a short range, but in large battles their support can very very easily get close while you deal with the mass of frontline troops.
You also might point out that its low damage and has a degree of randomness in the targets (or seems to), which is true except when its used en masse by groups of archers, especially at the back of your lines where support units are well hidden. Ive lost 30-50 damage in one turn to a group of units before.
The only effective counter i found was to just plough through the enemy quickly, so they couldnt get 2-3 volleys of hailstorm with with 3-5 archers.
IMO, if the ability required LOS, then it would be more balanced as like everything else, it would require the archer to move out of cover and get eyes on their target.
It would prevent them from using the ability on troops which youve carefully placed out of LOS and force them to use it on your frontline troops just like all other abilities.
This needs a sequel or at least some DLC. Or maybe apply the same gameplay and writing philosophy to another period of time, fantasy or sci-fi.
