Leveling up is easy - complete missions, kill mobs, earn prime, save more at the end of each level (sell towers after you kill final mob). Fuze, evolve and upgrade towers to get more powerful ones.
Notable towers (must have, mostly): Dragon, Sun, Accursed, Ice, Detector (on some maps), Mortar, Lightning (beware of "invogorating jolt" bug, that speeds enemies up), AirGuard.
Simply useful towers - Stone (as ersatz for Dragon while you don't have it), Energy, Sharpshooter, Prime.
Other towers generally less effective, some are just borderline useless.
Useful Spells: Curse, Ligtning, Magma, Meteor. Damage-dealing spells tend to be less effective at higher levels.

I would also recomend you getting the extra 5% bonus of evolutioning your towers. forge two sets at level two together and you get the bonus on forging. 5% dont seem like much but it does make a difference. Just remember to have two yellow level 2 cards.

Hmm, so you can pause, tear everything down and get credits to carry over to the next map?

Not to next map, but to current map's "exit pool" - that would increase your score. If you want to compete in a ladder.
As for 5% percents, well, I completed the game and earned all achievements with standard evolution, so do not worry. Just try not to over-fuse weaker cards - you'll need them later.

Not just for competition. Prime remaining when you complete a non-grind map (main path maps) translates to bonus silver as well as score and achievement credit for the selling achievement. It pays to get the timing down for the "last second pause".

Since we are limited on post-mission purchase, there is no point, generally. At least I see none - I either had enough, or had not. :)
