How do I control the character with the d-pad?

This is such a basic and obvious thing that should be in every 2D scrolling game, the option to control the character with the d-pad. Yet, I can't find the option to do that, am I blind? I can't get myself to play through this game with the analog stick.

Calibrate the controller in Options. When it prompts you to press the Analog stick left, right, up down, do it instead with the d-pad. Then when it prompts you to do the same with the d-pad, move the analog stick.

In this way you will be able to control the character with the d-pad.

A solution that I shouldn't even need to use, but also doesnt work as the calibration looks a bit different for me (Windows 8.1)

I tried the calabration in the controller section utterly failed. Never allowed me to fully calibrate my controller, it irks me badly because the controller works just find with other games on Linux. Unepic and Apotheon have terrible controller support for Linux, while every other game gets it right.
