The real problem is that the character doesn't handle consistantly. The boat rocks back and forth and affects your jumping a bit, but the jump mechanic also does weird things like slow you down midair, or make you jump one way and absolutely refuse to turn.
Can kind of make it infuriating when you randomly slowdown midair or stop responding when some of the tricker jumps require very fine midair control, without any reasonable explanation why.
