Man, these tunnel escapes..
Since the recent update 25 somehow all my prisoners get an abundent amount of garden shovels, and spoons then crawl their asses outside my prison. Its nice seeing prisoners make escape attempts more but seems overly common the amount of digging tools they abtain. The only way to counter this is by creating a large perimeter wall at the start of constructing a new prison.

How about dogs and metal detectors? Seem to work pretty great for me. I have very few people tunnel their way out of my prison.

Ya thats a good idea ill just revert back to using a lot of metal detectors. I stopt using them since they would cause my prisoners to get pissed off and riot in previous patches, but now there always pissed off prisoners with reputation lol, thanks guys.

dogs are a very good way of finding tunnel also and they fight very well have dogs patrol around the edges of your cell blocks somtimes giving false alerts but you can usally know there is a tunnel because your dog will go off multiple times in one block

I've only had one attempt and i stopped it. I have dogs patrolling around my cell blocks ALL the time and do daily cell searches. Tools never turn up cause they're always caught by metal detectors before they get to their cell. I have over 200 inmates so far, half of which are max sec. If you have adequate security you wont even have any attempts.

i have problems finding the tunnels itself, the dogs sniffs it, but i can't find the source. i have almost 450 max prisoners and the cells are pretty cramped up. right now i have a trail of 30 yellow flags haha. they are working harder on those tunnels then i nthe workshop :P

Ya same just need to routinely do shakedowns and hopefully a guard will find the source of the tunnel. Almost have to do shakedowns every day to prevent escapes lol.

It is horrible at my prison.
I have the entire prison surrounded by a three layer perimeter wall. All the individual cell blocks are surrounded as well. I have guard dogs, armed guards and normal guards patrolling the cell blocks. I have multiple dogs patrolling the dig routes threshold (1 dog for 4 squares only). Shakedowns pretty much every 8 ingame hours. Metal detectors spammed at every entrance.

And still these guys escape with ease. The tunnels get discovered so late and it takes mostly at least 4 cell searches to find a tunnel of which I already know it is there.

Another thing I don't get. I have constant vision on the cell. Either a guard or CCTV and still nobody discovers them digging the tunnels? What is this?

The tunnels got too buffed in my opinion. The prisoners dig way too fast, the dogs react too slowly or not at all, searches are hardly an option to find tunnels and replacing every toilet is tedious. I hope they nerve it back so the speed at which they dig (with or without tools) is reduced significantly.

So now I'm puzzled why I'm not seeing more tunnels. Is this a max sec. thing? My post-update-25 med. sec. prison has yet to see a tunelling attempt and I've got the population up to 200+. (I have a small max sec. wing, but all the people in it came in as med. sec..)

I've managed to keep the supply of tools very low, that might be part of the explanation, but beyond that I don't know.

The prison part I am talking about is minimal security. So not even medium/max/supermax :/
After the problems with minimum security I didnt even bother doing it for the others. I am better off letting them rot in a holding cell or solitary.

Are your prisoners happy btw? Mine mostly have complaints, are injured and/or are suppressed. That might add to the tunnel factor

Yes, my people spend most of the day well satisfied. There's a spike in unhapiness right after peple wake up since needs build up overnight, but it usually doesn't get above a low threat level. After breakfast people are reasonably happy alll day.

What can I say? I'm a benevolent overlord.

I've only had a single tunnel escape attempt since the update. It was a prisoner in the protective custody wing of my prison. Little sob.... He didn't get away but I was left with my finger hovering above the drop down to reassign him back into general population. I mean it is only 50 grand hit for a day right?? <Evil Laugh>
:prisoner:

Almost wish I did have a few more attempts to keep things interesting. Anyone else have some prisoners just try and bum rush their way to the prison entrance?

I had one attempt in my new prison that was made with escape prevention in mind (here freshly built with no prisoners yet (and a cost of 1.9 M$) :
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=321003709 )

I detected the attempt because my snitches told me about a makeshift pickaxe in one of the cells .... I promptly searched the cell (sorry snitches for raising your suspicion, but these things have priority) and, aside from the pickaxe, the search also detected a tunnel in the making (with already 7 -10 tiles build).

So, informations about tools in the cells are extremly precious for detecting tunnels

You know, you can get around that by releasing the CIs first and searchign the cell a minute later. That way you can search a bunch of room on your CIs say so without getting them killed.

I finally found a tunnel too. It was huge, conecting a whole row of cells. Playing with my saves I find that it would have lead to a massive escape within hours if I hadn't found it when I did.

The wooden picks seem to be the key. I can pretty much keep a lid on any metalic tools. But you only locate these by CI information or luck. (On the luck front, I've taken to breaking my cell blocks up with doors to keep them small and then searching each block every few days.)
