What is the determining factor to how many prisoners can be in one cell?

Is it the bed? Like if I put a bunk bed in a cell instead of a single bed will they put two prisoners in there instead of one?

No, you have to change the room from "cell" to "dormitory" for multiple prisoners to be in there.

Yes. I haven't played lately, but when I was playing regularly I put bunk beds in my cells and nothing happened until I changed the room type to dormitory.

I'm getting some 20 prisoners a day now, and it's become a bit hard to build enough room for them as well as other things needed in the prsion.

Well, the rules are following:

a cell always holds 1 prisoner and have to include at least a bed and toilet. Minimum size 3x2, if you get a lawyer and research small cell, no minimum size (well you need at least 3 square to place a bed and toilet), so most effective way for cells are 3x1 with bed toilet and shower above toilet (this is my standard cell).

a dormitory can hold up to 1 prisoner per 4 square, except if you build a dormitory with an area of 3x2, it can hold 2 prisoners. if you build smaller than 3x2 dormitories you need at least 4 square and they can hold 1 prisoner, but privacy need isnt satisfied.

if a prisoner cant assigned to a cell, he will be assigned to a holding cell.

Oh wow. I had no idea it was that involved. Right when I think I've started to figure out the game I learn stuff like this.

At any rate I'm guessing dorm is the way to go to keep prisoners. At least to start with. Individual cells seem like overkill at this point.

It's just an elaborate way of saying "A dorm needs 4 squares per prisoner", while also clearing up a few things that might cause questions later.

Yeah, I'm doing the rough math in my head, but in the building I built 16 prison cells I'm thinking I could have at least tripled that number if I did dorm.

well, i start out with dorms of 3x3 squares with 2 beds and 1toilet/shower and redesign them later into 2 3x1 cells. But thats just me =)

I hadn't researched small cells at that point so they had to be 3x2. So with walls that's 5x4 and I had a 2x2 hallway around the sides. 36x12 not counting the walls of the main building. So 36 by 4 would give me 36 prisoners, but I have 12 and not 4 so I could have housed 3 times as many prisoners.

I'm realizing now I messed up by using the quick build cells, cause I could have used one wall as a wall for a cell on either side instead of two walls.

Edit: Actually I think I messed up the math. It would be a lot more than 3 times. 36x3 is 108. Divide that by 16 it's 6.75 times as much. Asuming I didn't butcher the math again.
