thanks for your response too tcraggsy.
Did I commented that I won by 4x1 away against the team who was second place?
Sometimes I feel like there's an AI thinking "Ok I need to stop this guy. Let's ♥♥♥♥ everything"
if u go back to fm12 cos it was easy u will always think the same about fm14
:-)
winning is fun and many people complain that fm14 is broke or strange things happen and say its not as good as oldfer versions but i think many of the old fm/cm players got use to flying through seasons without much thought and winning most of the time, fm14 seems to have more depth and more complexitiy too it. If you get complacent and skip alot of the finer details on fm14 u will come unstuck as where on previous versions u could get away with it and still win most of the time.
1.) Form - Sounds simple but some players, regardless of stats will "play" badly, perhaps not in ratings, but from watching the game you will see they will be the ones missing interceptions, blocks etc that lead to goals. Replace them, even with an inferior (statewise) player for a couple of matches. This alone worked wonders for me in tightening the defence.
2.) I actually tell my defence to Close down less. The reason being that then the opposition will usually play it around the box and shoot from outside, usually high and wide :) By closing down, you open space in the box.
3.) Set Pieces - Can do some match training to defend against these but usually I play these defensive, getting tall players to mark theirs, having all back etc as have found that it is common they score a goal from a corner rebound, hence I like to pack the box with bodies to increase the chance it will hit a player and not the back of the net.
Anyways, my 5 cents, hope it is useful.
The other big one is that ongoing alterations as the match goes on make a pretty impressive difference so long as you take care and don't do the less intelligent suggesstions your assistant comes up with.
Last big one is definitely changing your focus based on the situation. A lot of the time, people tend to just set balanced, or attacking, or some such, and use it to start with every match. pay attention to the match ups though, and play it careful in trap games, especially when you're having to rotate players for fitness. Control is a good solid starting form to use in games you should be winning, and I tend to rotate back into Counter once I've got a lead. It's all instinct though, you have to look at the flow of the game.
