I smell a lovecraft inspiration here! damn it I love that writer and I am pretty impressed in how many games his creations can be found! Quake, X-com, WoW, any more games you know that are inspired from lovecrafts novels? (I don't mean the games that are directly recreating lovecrafts world)

The Secret World for sure, tons of it.
Cthulhu saves the world!! hahaha. Seriously now, here's a list that comes to mind:

- Alone in the Dark
- The penumbra series
- Amnesia: the Dark Descent
- Sherlock Holmes: the Awakened

If it has unspeakable and/or cosmic, insanity inducing horrors, a lot of madness and undescribable horror/terror, then it has at least a bit of lovecraft-inspired content :)
Agreed, Lovecraft is all over video games--some more subtly than others. My favorite is when designers throw in a little Joseph Conrad influence (Mass Effect 2, Resident Evil 5) while Spec Ops: The Line is unabashedly inspired by Heart of Darkness.

Has anyone discovered any games that draw influences from other authors?

Pretty much every zombie game ever is John Wyndham
Quake is what got me into Lovecraft. Also, I love how Shub's full name gets censored in the forum here.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Reqiuem. My favorite gamecube game, would highly advise booting it up on Dolphin if you haven't played it. Now if only there was an Arkham Horror video game....
- Alone in the Dark

yes, yes I remember the final boss.

- Amnesia: the Dark Descent
- The penumbra series

I never looked at events in this way. yeah maybe the shadow is like shggoth but well, not sure.
Prisoner of Ice, and of course the Dark Corners of the Earth, which is one of the most creepy games, imho.
Wow! Prisoner of Ice. I didn't think anybody would remember that. I still have the box and floppies of that one. I loved "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth", and I think that "Clive Barker's Undying" kind of fits the category too.

Oh, and don't forget that Cthon is kind of a play on Cthulhu too.
One of the very first Lovecraftian games was an Infocom text adventure called "The Lurking Horror" which was really creepy and good because it let you create the images of what was happening. as Lovecraft did. You can probably still get it for free somewhere on line. Maybe the best.

there are zombies inspired by chtulhu in resident evil:revelation for 3DS. also, Lovecraft's work is extremely prominent in indie games.
Fallout 3's Dunwich Building, and the whole quest surrounding it

Sigh, cosmic horror is more then just the pantheon of gods lovecraft intruduced. Penumbra and Amnesia are heavely influenced by that insanity inducing horror. Even if its not the cthulhu mythos its still cosmic horror. Its about mood, the unspeakable, beyond human comprehension, lost alien civilisations etc. Have you even read his stories?
well... maybe yes? how else can you be fan of him? I just said that I didn't look at those two games that way, whoa...
