Can you heal?
As in the title. I've just died because I can't seem to be able to heal. I couldn't go back to the village either to save, so I just lost 30 min of progress. Before I go any further, am I missing something obvious?

There's a spring in the very far left from where you start that will heal you.
Otherwise you have to collect the green orbs until the bar under your health fills up, then it will replenish.

Ok, I think I'm getting the hang of it. So there's a lot of backtracking in this game?
Vilurum 15 iul. 2013 la 12:40
It's a metroidvania, so there's a certain amount of backtracking to deal with previously-unsolvable puzzles once you get the tools to deal with them.

Fully exploring the first area of the game (Gate of Guidance) helps considerably with the logistics of backtracking by unlocking a pretty basic game mechanic. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you haven't explored there enough and probably shouldn't be heading off to other areas yet.

Ok, thanks. I assume you're talking about some sort of a teleporter? I haven't seen anything like that yet but I'll have a look for it.

@piszczel1 Yup, the chest itself for that item is in the area of Gate of Guidance with the moving platform/elevator. Definitely the most important item in the game!
Got it already and beat the first boss. Great game so far! I've played the remake and it was much less responsive than this, which is why I was questioning buying this, but I'm glad I did.

-Pink fairies that heal you slowly over time
-Green glowing Soul Stones that will completely heal you if you collect enough
-Killing a main boss will automatically fill your Soul Stone meter
-Collecting a blue Sacred Orb will refill and enlarge your health
-Aside from the springs on the surface, there is a hidden spring somewhere in the ruins
Collect the greens and heal yourself.

Just keep trying and you'll get through it.

Did anyone else find this game by searching "metroidvania" too?

Also, play Rogue Legacy
The game is getting pretty hard! I can tell I will definitely struggle with some of the puzzles.

I love metroidvanias. I've got Rogue Legacy, I don't think it's that good - it's mainly the randomly generated dungeon. I prefer when all the levels are pre-made.

Love this game.

I love Rogue Legacy. Random dungeons stop people from relying on walkthroughs.

That said La Mulana is great. The remake is better than I thought it would be and this is a blast.

In my opinion they just take away from what makes these type of games great - all the secrets and little details get lost when you randomly generate a dungeon. The secrets in RL are a joke, and all the areas look the same.

Well, it is a roguelike and a big part of being a roguelike is randomizing content. You have to sacrifice a lot of things when you make the game create randomly created content. One thing though, I don't know who told you it was a Metroidvania, because it certainly isn't.
There's five primary forms of healing in the game: As mentioned above, you want to obtain the Holy Grail as soon as possible, it will save you a lot of headaches in the future.

Also, with the Holy Grail, if you have scanned any Holy Grail Tablet with the Hand Scanner, the game will automatically Quick Save the game for you. So if you die or get stuck, you merely pick back up at the last Holy Grail point you passed by.

CAUTION: DO NOT QUIT THE GAME BEFORE SAVING MANUALLY! Your Quick Save file is deleted upon exiting the game,

How to Restore your HP, in 5 simple ways

- Warping to the Surface and going to the hot springs to the left of town. Standing in it will restore your HP to full.

- Finding one of the Sacred Orbs. Not only will this completely heal you, but your HP is permanently increased as well!

- Collecting the green orbs enemies sometimes drop. There is a little blue bar underneath your HP bar that tells you how much EXP you've obtained. Maxing this out completely restores your HP to full, and also resets the EXP bar to zero.

- Completing the Isis' Pendant Quest rewards you with the ability to summon Healing Fairies at various points throughout the Ruins. Once summoned, the Healing Fairy will follow you around anywhere you go (even if you warp to another spot in the game, the fairy will warp with you) for a while and gradually restore your HP. Note though this won't save you from an instant death trap, or a large damage attack (such as being struck by lightning or falling on a spike trap) so do be careful!

- Obliterating any one of the Guardians will reward you with a full HP heal, similar to that of filling your EXP meter up. Note that your EXP meter will also reset to zero in the process. You cannot escape to another locatoin once you've started a Guardian battle, so be sure you're prepared before challenging one! (Yes, you can bring a Healing Fairy to the fight, but if you die, you have to go get the Healing Fairy again)

Oh there is another Hot spring in the Back Area of the Giants, you have to destroy a Block first to activate it ;)
