Too difficult?
I was almost decided to buy AoD when I came upon a review that says this game is punishingly difficult. Then I found a few more reviews that say the same.

I play games to relax after work. There should be challenges, to be sure, and good tactics should make all the difference, but I dislike games that are more work and frustration than play. I can get that in my job.

So, my question to those that have already played it: is it too difficult?

Combat is hard but there are non-combat ways through the game. How hard is hard depends entirely on you and your preferences/experience.

Try the demo and see for yourself.
I would say the game is rather rewardingly difficult
Its a fun difficulty, finding ways to beat hard encounters is enjoyable, but if you' tend to rage when you die in games I'd say its probably not for you.

But if you play a diplomatic character you might not even need to fight at all.

if you expect ot kill 50 people just from the start like in diablo or any other power fantasy than let me dissapoint you.
You will be glad to win 1 on 1 fight witthout losing most of your hp.
Although masters of this game can easily kill whole towns.
Many like the difficulty, and i can understand why. Nonetheless a casual mode would make sense, at least from an economic perspective as the game can then appeal to a wider market.

Thank you i'll give it a miss all these hard games get old fast.. What a shame..
Good RPG games have a lot of relaxing fun mixed with chosen moments of intense difficulty where gamers need to think carefully about every move and tactic. Baldur's Gate was a shining example of a good mix. Even better when an experienced and confident player can move to harder difficulty settings should he feel like it.

To each his own, I suppose, but dying every two minutes in normal difficulty mode isn't my idea of fun. Nor is an RPG where most combat has to avoided. Devs should always take care not to cater too much to the tastes of the gaming snobs, i.e. the type often overrepresented on game forums.

But I'll try the demo. Apart from the combat difficulty it looks like a game I would like.

+100

I prefer a more entertaining casual game i can follow the story, like Dragon Age Origins etc, these hardcore rinse and repeat fests just make me angry and i feel like i've wasted money..

Try the demo and see for yourself. Plus if you like following the story, there are several non-combat paths through the game so you aren't forced to fight.
One of my favourite ever rpgs was Ultima 7, it was so ahead of it's time. With features like a 'living world' where npcs had their daily routines of work, sleep and socialising. The combat was a bit meh but it's a game i'll never forget.

As for Age of Decadence, yeah it's good. I'm glad i finally bought it :)

If it's difficulty then the more reason to wanna play it.
i remember that months ago people were whining about the fact that they couldn't kill two thief at the beginning. Is this changed? I hope not. :P

If you want to be a hero you have to work for it. :D

Old demo was the most RNG-dependant game I have ever played, try the new demo and see how it goes yourself.

Keep in mind that if your combat skills are low, you'll be relying on nothing but luck (aka RNG). If your skills are high, you'll beat fights consistently regardless of luck.
It's just right.
