Pretentious socialists scamming socialists.
I highly doubt Tale of Tales made this game for the money. Since this type of game rarely sells well, and they don't really have a track record of making piles of money on their creations (look for their post mortem on The Graveyard for an example).
Oh what am I doing trying to bring reason into this conversation. I'm out of here, have fun!
Even Dear Esther and Proteus that are completely devoid of gameplay,
Are worth more than this.
This should, at most, have been about £3.
It's thin, it's shallow, it's patronizing, and worst of all, it's smug.
I highly doubt Tale of Tales made this for customer satisfaction,
And that is what I find most deplorable - the fact that it's been subliminally marketed and sold as an almighty advance in the new-agey-epiphany-inducing-masterpiece genre, when in fact it is nothing more than a bucketload of drivel; a vain and narcissistic trophy.
Nice graphics, and nice music, I'll admit
But that doesn't make it a worthwhile 'game'.
And it certainly doesn't justify the price - £7/$10
Well done artists, well done musicians - you did a good job.
But whoever designed this game, wow.
Stop watching french avant garde films and start going outside once in a while.
[Hint: Fresh air does actually exist beyond the pseudointellectualbabblebubble]
Fine, make games like this -
But don't expect others to be enthralled by such complete disregard for the consumer.
And whoever enjoyed it - fine. Good for you. I'm glad you can get off to it, but I - and many others - really don't. And it's not because we're narrow minded. It's because we know baloney when we're served it, and this - as far as I know - is the largest portion of it that I've come across yet.
Yes, it won an award. So what? Hitler was elected as Time Man of the Year in 1938 and Stalin got the same award twice - does that mean I should be at all compelled, or required in the slightest, to admire and respect them?
No.
'All that glitters, is not gold'
Tale of Tales can certainly appear smug in their interviews and writing outside of their games, but the games by themselves have never struck me as patronizing, shallow or 'pseudointellectual' whatever that means. Well, maybe the Graveyard was a bit hamfisted.
But I guess you had a different experience then. Did you buy it, play it and were you actively angry the whole time while playing, or just sad and dissapointed? I SHALL BE MAD AT YOU AND AT THIS GAME FOR NOT BEING DEEP AND CLEVER ENOUGH FOR YOU!
Also, this game won an award? cool.
Pseudo-intellectual means something that is not intellectual but is treated like it is. In other words, fake or fraudulent wisdom. The games do strike me as having those characteristics because they assume some sort of moral viewpoint that is very.. arrogant, in my opinion. The approach they take is too deeply contrived for it to garner any of my respect.
In fact I've never bought a tale of tales game because each time I see their work I just grimace, to be quite honest. At first I had no idea this was a tale of tales game, and at that point I already hated it but when I found out, it made a bit more sense to me.
So indeed I didn't have the misfortune of buying this game, instead I was able to play a friends copy who laughably bought it. I was very close to buying it, myself, in fact. Like I said - the music and the artwork appealed to me, and it was the gameplay itself and the overall tone of the game that has made me reel in such horror.
I refuse to see this as anything more than bones dressed up as meat; but then again, the phrase 'One mans trash, is another mans treasure' comes to mind..
If it had been sold at a lower pricepoint, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Edit: Oh and if you like it so much, perhaps you should write a review about it or a guide. A contrasting opinion will always be welcome here I am sure.
Ah well, I'm not looking to get into an argument, I was just genuinely curious about people hating this game so deeply. I do realise their games are generally more shallow than their trailers and writings imply. Thanks for clarifying. One man's treasure is another man's trash indeed.
I love the game, but I can't be bothered to write a guide or review. There's not much to write a guide about, and in writing a review I always feel I'm pushing my opinion on others, and I'm not a good enough writer to write something I'd be happy with.
There's not much to write a guide about.. lol, I think we can agree on that.
This is the sort of comment I expect from a passive aggresive ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
No point skirting around the truth (or beating around the bush), is there.
Something we might also agree on.
Quip away, hombre.
I couldn't agree more.

(I love Recettear by the way, I mean I just thought of it because... well, "capitalism")
Well that, and the game that's literally called Capitalism.
