The devs said Linux support was coming. They also said that the Steam version of the game is patched by Atari and not directly by the developers, so patch synchronization might not happen. Linux is coming with an ETA of eventually, but a Steam release is even more of a mystery. Enjoy WINE.

This game is no longer supported due to contract issues.
You can buy the original BG1 + BG2 from gog and run under wine.
Even more you can use comunity patches like bugfixes, wide screen mod and Baldur's Gate Trilogy (or similar) to play both games using BG2 engine.

Get GoG.com version and use PlayonLinux[www.playonlinux.com]. I've tried some other titles it's easy to configure and run.

How unfortunate. However, due to the number of quality native games now available, wine => no sale.

But none of those other games is Baldur's Gate is the problem. A few minutes setting it up with mods and Wine is time well spent for this classic.
