I believe you can as it is selectable on a pure thief.They are also quite rare in bg1

Actually you can buy one in the Inn in Candlekeep right at the start of the game. To get enough money to do so you might need your Thief talents tho...

It is a non magic one and will eventually break.

And yes you can Backstab with Katanas. Backstab works with all Melee weapons a Thief can use.

Backstabbing done by a club or quaterstaff must be extremely painful, if you can achieve penetration and should do double the damage of normal pointy backstab weapons.

I think he means that magical katanas are very rare, which they are throughout the series.
Celestial Fury is the best one, sadly only a +3 and not well suited for ToB.
