How to enjoy DooM?

I've played with DOSBox, ZDoom and Skulltag, yet I get bored after one or two levels in Doom. I mean, I know it's from 1993 but things really get boring/tedious after a while, especially those huge confusing levels (I think the first of these I reached is the one full of boxes/crates and the room with the switches activating other huge rooms in Doom 2's The Pit)

Now, I am no CoD fanboy or anything like that. I genuinely enjoyed other classic FPS like Blood, Serious Sam and Painkiller. I just wanna love Doom, that's all ;) (and also because I have nothing else better to do)

I think it's the graphics even though I mean not a graphicwhore by any means. I know Doom and the likes are best enjoyed in their original form/visuals, but the 1993 graphics just doesn't cut it for me (they strain my eyes)

I think I might be able to help, this doesn't completely solve the problem, but GZDoom, has the option to "smoothe" the graphics in it's GLsettings, which might make it easier on the eyes.

I am a huge DOOM fan, and although I have always LOVED this game since the beginning, it isn't for everyone. I have a friend with a similiar problem,and the only problem I've ever had is the multi-player! Try out soome other oldies, or DOOM 3 if you really need a taste. Game on.
