Linux users - 10-28-13 UPDATED WITH NEW INFO
First off, sorry for not getting this post updated any sooner. I slacked a bit, and I apologize for that. Now, on to the info.

As you guys already know, the game was finally updated for Linux, with a few key differences.

First, there is no sound. The quickest fix while they're working on migrating to Fabric was to remove the sound system, and then remove all calls to said sound system. So, it is normal to have no audio in the game for the moment. Fortunately, the sound at the moment really just added a bit to the ambiance, it wasn't really required anywhere yet.

Second, this build is still incredibly, INCREDIBLY buggy. Crashes abound, and many people can't even get in game.

This is well known to the devs at this point, and they are working hard on getting these issues resolved. Unfortunately, these issues weren't really found in testing because they aren't there for everyone, and the test team only has a couple of people that had linux boxes that they could run it on. So, alas, it went out onto steam with the crashes still overwhelmingly present.

As soon as these issues are fixed and tested (as well as they can be) rest assured that it'll get pushed to Steam ASAP.

yeah i was playing more or less happily on Windows 8, swapped over to Mint and i have to register on a website just to play? WTF? lol

Yeah, it's cause it's the old prototype with their own log in system. You don't need to register, just type in anything and you'll be able to log in. They'll get Linux updated to the newest version soon. :)

Thanks to confirm that it is an old version, I was quite surprised that the game was very different than in the videos. It would be nice to add this information in the disclamer.

More exactly, this old version is: 0.0.3.c7bc. It just allow to build a castle, no attacks. The game save is working. Bricktrons freeze time to time (save/load game sounds to fix it) and there is many pathfinding bugs. There is also several UI usability issues, it is probably useless to mention them, there are maybe fixed in the most recent version of the game.

The login/passwd can be ignored, there is nowhere to register.

Resolution can be changed in $HOME/.config/unity3d/Sauropod Studio/Castle Story/prefs

Unfortunely, I did not find how to change key bindings.

BTW, I am happy to support both Steam and a game from a small company with an original idea on Linux. I am sure this game will be better in the future.

They know about the issue and are working to fix it. It should be proper soon. :)

Thanks Box/Thierry for the update. That's always positive to know that a a fix is on progress for a blocking issue and why it is going to take a while.

Well at least there is an explanation for this... but I thought the devs said they were bug testing all weekend? Did they ever try installing it in Linux? Great quality control guys, at least we got the community to do it.

Maybe they could contact Wwise and they wouldn't need to rewrite their sound to FMOD.
I didn't know about that, I'll show that to Thierry. Thanks!

What retrry said, it just plain didn't build.

Well atleast we narrowed the problem down :D.

The rest clear? No Directx dependencies etc? Just kidding, keep up the good work ;).
The_Box Oct 2, 2013 @ 12:57pm
Nope, just the issue with Wwise, though after sending them over that link about Wwise coming to Steambox, they're planning to contact Wwise again and see if it will properly support linux now, or if this is just a months-off plan. If so, they'll switch, since they'll be able to get fmod working much sooner than that.

Bought the game just now and it crashes right after I click the New Game button and click the Island. I had to register to play which was a pain to find but Google "Castle Story Register" found a page.

Hopefully this will be corrected soon.
Thanks

MAL, all the info is right in the top post. Please read the opening post of a thread before responding to it. You would have found that registration isn't needed.

Hang on for the moment, they're working hard at it, but there still isn't a current Linux release, it's still the old prototype.
