Black screen when I try and start the game.

What the title says ^^, screen goes black and I can't do anything, can't alt tab, and ctrl alt del doesn't work either, and i'm forced to restart the PC.

my specs are
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 (drivers up to date)
Intel i5 3570K 4.3Ghz oc.
8GB ram
Windows 7 64 bit (also installed latest updates)

Scanned for any viruses, other malware and the like.
I've tried verifying game cache, uninstalling and reinstalling the game as well as steam,
i've tried disabling steam community in game from game properties and tried to run in windowed mode, I can see the window appears briefly but then I'm stuck with the black screen.

Any ideas?

What type of monitor do you have?

its a VX2336S-LED by viewsonic.

Update directx. Update graphics drivers. Try my fixes in the other threads. Your monitor may noyt be able to use the nonstandard refresh rates the game uses. BTW, try alt-f4 if you black screen again. If it still doesnt go bak to desktop, then the game indeed crashed

Hi, thanks, directx and graphics drivers are already up to date. I tried Radeon Pro , as well as the patched executable.
On Nvidia Control Panel, I have the option to set different resolutions, as well as the option to customize/ create a custom resolution and refresh rate. Here I set the refresh rate to 30, just to test to see if thats what was causing the problem with COI, the screen went black and I got the message "out of range". My point is, if I could run the monitor at 30Hz, it would indicate the problem running COI was elsewhere?

Again, try alt+f4 when it black screens and tell us what happens.

Pull up windows event viewer and see if you can find the application crash event for it. I'm not sure where to start with your issue-- try navigating to the games folder and right clicking on COI.exe and 'run as admin...'

Hi, not sure what exactly i'm looking for on Event Viewer, COI? under Windows Logs> Application? in the viewing window here in the middle, I don't have any errors or warnings, after having shut down- just 'information' events. Run as Administrator doesn't work eitther.

I had this problem and struggled with it for a little while. Are you able to hear the intro splash screens and cinematic if you leave it idle while the screen's black? If so, it's definitely something tthat'd need tweaking via RadeonPro or something similar, that's how I was able to get it to work.

If you don't hear anything after 20-30 seconds of a black screen, there's something else going on other than the video settings.

Nope I can't hear anything. I'm considering formatting now, though I don't much hope for that. It leave it just for a little while first in case anyone has any more ideas. Thanks for the help/advice so far though.

Just bought this game this morning and I am having the same problem. When starting the game, a black screen appears and nothing. I am force to reboot to get back into windows as I cant by any other way.
I have downloaded the patch just moment ago. but the problem doesn't go away, black screen is here.
I re-installed my graphics drivers and everything else I can think of, just like the guy in this post has done too
my rig is i7 x3970, nvidia gtx 780, 16gb ram, win 8

Got the blank screen too. I can hear sound and just alt+tab back to windows though. Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, when I alt+tabbed to windows and then BACK to COI it worked, very strange.

I have seen the game some minutes, tried to change resolution...and then the screen turned black....and Monitor says no resolution that works with this Monitor.

But now i cant change it back...as i only get black screens.

Where is the file where i manually can change resolution, or force window mode?
