How do I change difficulty on the fly?

I'm sure when I played this game years ago I was able to up the difficulty of my current campaign. How do I do this? Or was it removed with the addon, because that is the only difference I can think of between now and before?

Edit: I notice I can change it in the menu where you choose your character, but this is sending me all the way back to the crypt at the start!

Edit: Also Gold difficulty is not available I'm sure it used to be available when I played years back, I never completed the game yet I was playing on gold difficulty.

Picking a new difficulty starts a new game with your current character; Basically New Game+. To unlock Gold or higher you have to finish the game on Bronze or Silver first.

Darn, I swear when this game first came out you could change the difficulty at any time and it did not start a new campaign. Oh well, bronze is way too easy, I'll have to start again on silver :-(

Silver is still pretty easy with the right build. Even though on my Serpahim, enemies are 6 levels above me.

I think there's a file you can edit to unlock the other difficulty modes. I can't imagine Niobium being very fun at Level One.

I can quite clearly remember switching to gold when I reached the first large city (not Sloeford, the next one) when I played this game years back.

I had it wrong. The difficulties are unlocked at certain levels; 60 for Gold, 100 for Platinum and 200 for Niobium (I think).
