Polymer without Hi-Res Textures?
I really like the new lighting effects that come with Polymer as well as the high-resolution art (e.g. HUD, menu), but the 3d models and HD textures don't look all that good and worst of all cause performance drops.

Is there a way to play with the latters disabled?

That would require writing a custom .def file to load HUD and menu sprites only unless anyone knows how to disable HRP textures while leaving said sprites in-game.

I highly suggest you try the latest SVN build here[dukeworld.duke4.net]. Apparently, there has been several changes to optimize Polymer and I can now finally play on my native resolution (1080p instead of 720p before) and without having to use Polymer models.

By default, EDuke32 (including Polymer) uses only the original game art. The HRP is a mod that normally you have to download and install separately. It's definitely possible to not use the HRP. Either remove the HRP, or in Renderer Options disable models and textures.
Pardon my noobness, but what's a SVN build?

Anyway, I think I'm onto something now: I started EDuke32 with the autoload unchecked, which somehow allows me to play with the new lighting effects. However, everything else (HD art, sprites, textures) is disabled. Not exactly sure why that is nor if the game's not going to crash on me after a while.

Thanks! What do I have to edit in textures.def?
You're probably better off editing duke3d_hrp_polymer.def. Insert "// " at the beginning of these lines:

include highres/sprites.def include highres/textures.def

so that it looks like this:

// include highres/sprites.def // include highres/textures.def

Easier than I thought. Thanks again!
