Doom or Duke Nukem 3D
This has probably been done before, but whatever.
Duke Nukem for sure. Better atmosphere, sexier pixelated women, and better gameplay. IMO
It's the gameplay mixed with the atmosphere that makes me keep coming back here rather than Doom or Quake.

Character-wise or engine-wise?
Duke obviously wins both, I don't understand how you can even discuss or debate something like this.
Doom would have been as advanced as Duke (engine-wise) if it had a few more years in development.

gameplay wise and character-wise, yes.
You are forgetting that both games are very much alike, which is why I made this thread in the first place.

It took me awhile to think about this, and I just can't choose. I grew up with both of those games and it would be hard letting one down.

Why choosing only one game? I would say the series of DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem, and Half-Life are all equally fun to play. Just take turns whenever you feel like it.

Besides, Doom has pretty much everything Duke3D has. So many source ports, 3D Model options, and advenced abilities like DukePlus and Brutal Doom.

One thing though, Doom has multiple Multiplayer options like ZDaemon and Zandronum. Duke3D Megaton Edition is the first I've ever had the chance, now wishing there would be multiplayer with eDuke32's abilities like HRP, DukePlus, and other features Mods can offer.

actually doom came out like a half a decade earlier and broke the ground for duke. perhaps you weren't aware at the time or maybe you forgot because it was a long time ago.
the two games are not very much alike. and if you like one better than the other, no matter what reasons you site, it is a matter of taste and there is no accounting for taste. that's what makes this thread pointless...

Aside from the fact that they're both FPS games, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Strange idea wanting to compare Doom - the pioneer of shooters - to anything in the first place, tbh. That's like claiming Hellraiser to be better than Night of the Living Dead.

I think Doom's gameplay is a bit better tuned myself, though not by that much. Also, as far as editing goes, Doom all the way. That's less to do with the original games though and more to do with the fact that Doom's community has nicer tools. :camel:

How are are they that much different? Seriously? I would loke to know.

Duke's engine is far more advanced than Doom's, but I would have to say that I prefer Doom's art and gameplay. Still love Duke though!

I can tell, your name has "Doom" written all over it!

Jumping, crouching, floor-over-floor environments, sloped floors and ceilings, overlapping sectors, enemy varieties (some even have multiple attacks in Duke), sound variety, talking character, ambient sound, inventory system, kicking while shooting, different character movement (Doom has a more slippery feel to it), should I go on some more?

arc is right, it's strange to compare these games considering the only difference between them were engine limitations due to their time, and if Doom just had a couple more years it would have been just as advanced as Duke 3D. Or even any other game passed Duke 3D. Duke 3D could have also been better with more time. It's all about the time.

You're right, dunno hy I didn't consider that. Would comparing Half-Life or Quake to this game be better?

It's all about the time. It could have been as good as those games if it just had more time. Keep in mind that I'm talking about the engine/graphic side of the game, not it's fun factor.
