Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons
Controller problem (Razer Onza)
I'm trying to play this game with a razer Onza. The analog sticks control the brothers movement. The shoulder buttons rotate the camera. But the left and right trigers do not perform their interact function. Using the keyboard I can confirm that the brothers are standing in the right location.

I don't even know how to check to make sure that Windows is recieving the correct input when I press the triggers, so I can't rule out a mechanical fault.

Can anyone help me ?

Some Googling told me about start>run>joy.cpl, so I know that the triggers are working as inputs on the Z Axis. So that rules out hardware faults.
can you bind the keyboard keys to the triggers through software?
How would I attempt that ?
You can try the freeware program "x360ce".

That worked. Partly.

Now the problem seems to be that the tiggers are registering as being held down when they aren't, and being released when I hold them.

In x360ce:
- When I release both triggers, the program shows both with a green light. For all other buttons, the green light shows when the button is pressed.
- When I hold the left trigger, the light for the right trigger goes out.
- Hold right trigger, light for left goes out.
- Hold both, both lights are on.

In game the triggers are behaving consistantly with green light meaning trigger pressed.

Now if I set the left trigger to HAxis 3 and the right trigger to IHAxis 3, the only problem is that pressing both triggers has the same result as pressing neither. Which is still a problem.

Playing around with the trigger settings and I can't find a configuration where I can get all 4 states (left held, right held, both held, neither held) to be recognised differently from each other. There is always at least one state which shows up as another.

I found this page[code.google.com] which lists Brothers under hookmask required. But I don't know how to enable the hookmask.
One (or several) of the following approaches could be the solution:

1) You could choose the "inverted Axis" option for the two triggers: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/displayimageformodaldialog/?imageurl=http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/3314954336265820809/61062D280BBA0092A3DBB58769FDC158F01B906D/
Click on the trigger, choose "Axes" --> "Inverted" --> then the axis (you wrote it's axis 3)
I just read that you tried this already and it did not work, maybe you can also experiment, by trying:
a) different axis or sliders (e.g. on my old Logitech gamepad the second analog stick's Y axis was recognized as a Slider), "Half Inverted" option
b) or go to the "Advanced" tab of the gamepad: http://www.mightorindustries.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/2.png (ignore the red circle, I found this via Google Image search) and set the triggers' dead zone to a high value, e.g. 50% or 90%, so the input ONLY gets recognized if you press it down 100%

2) Try this "hook mode" you read about - you can find it in the upper left on the "Options" tab: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zwKyDBTZX5c/U3ufJBDr2GI/AAAAAAAAB8Y/-hQRyXp_F7M/s1600/step6.png (ignore the red rectangles)

3) change your shoulder buttons mappings (trigger <---> bumper). Worst case now is that the camera always moves left or right, because x360ce still recognizes button presses all the time, but this is hardly a problem in the game. Actually you can also deactivate the buttons for the camera movement in this game, as there is never the need for moving the camera around as far as I remember. You could still use the keyboard keys.

The last one is not a real good solution of course (if you use x360ce for other games which use all shoulder buttons/triggers/bumpers/whatever they are called for essential commands, you still have a problem), but as this game is only a few hours long, it's maybe not worthwile to fiddle around with the gamepad setup for days, so it's better than nothing :P
set the triggers' dead zone to a high value
Not likely to help. It can already tell the difference between a held and released trigger. The problem is that is can't tell the difference between both held and neither held.

Try this "hook mode" you read about - you can find it in the upper left on the "Options" tab
I'm not sure which hook mode to set. Or if it will even help as the button presses displayed in x360ce are the ones the game sees.

change your shoulder buttons mappings (trigger <---> bumper)
Seems to work. Though mapping the bumper buttons to the axis doesn't let me operate the camera. So I'm hoping that I can do without manually adjusting the camera.
Having to hold the interact buttons down for long periods of time is getting annoying. Mainly because my finger holding the button twitches. Not sure if being able to use the triggers would be any better, but it seems poor game design if rubber band round the triggers would make you play better.

I've finished Brothers now. This fix worked.
As for my finger twitching, I solved that by sticking things on my keyboard to hold down the interact keys during that sequence.
