Now, I'm sure we're on the same side, but from your description I'm wondering if you would perhaps be better off with playing Minecraft. "A safe place to hang out because of the building elements" make it seem like you actually want to play Minecraft instead of Ace of Spades. Don't see this as an attack on you personally, but I don't think you want dedicated server software for the right reasons.
Anyway, in the dedicated server software's favour, I think releasing such software would actually enrich the gaming experience, especially because as it is now the online experience is very much lacking. If the online portion was fully optimized and working properly, an online game would indeed be a better experience.
I haven't seen the post where the developer said he didn't want to release dedicated server software, but it's actually very reasonable to think that not using dedicated servers should improve the user experience. Ace of Spades' maps are generally quite large, and since a typical LAN party is relatively small you'd end up with only a couple of players in a large map.
However, the thing that makes dedicated server software so interesting is because it ensures network performance, especially because the online portion cannot at the moment deliver such performance. After that it is indeed interesting to be able to manage server settings, but remember that in the first place this is a shooter. It's not meant to be a "safe place to hang out for family and friends". If that's what you want, you should play a different game. Minecraft already comes with server software, and there are other server solutions available for it as well.
