Standalone or steam
Just wondering if there are any benefits by uising standalone to steam. I have made all my purchases on steam, so i know my keys will work ,is there any differences between the two versions, besides early access to some content?

standalone has auto-updater and module manager but other then that they are identical.

Steam version wont accept keys from DCS store so if some massive sale hits there you wont be able to benefit :(

He's currently on steam so if he migrated to the standalone, he'd be a-okay.

with 1.5 you can actually add the standalone to steam using Add a game, and you have steam overlay just like the steam version.

so if you want a reason to stay on steam here some:

* you like getting modules later because you hate to spend money
* you would rather support valve then to support ED by giving em a bigger cut
* you like 2 DRM instead of just 1
* you don't know how to add a non-steam game to steam
* Gabe Newell is watching you
* you like to get sales that are slightly less discounted

With Steam you get all your games in one place. You get faster and available downloads. Apart from that, not much else.

People that just play DCS and pretty much DCS only won't ever understand why people use Steam, but that's ok. They have the stand-alone version.

With standalone I still have all games in one place - on my PC's SSD's. ;) And I have to disagree about download speeds since DCS offers torrent downloads in most cases. But the main reason why I use the standalone is the additional money ED and the 3rd party devs make from it. And it is also nice to have access to new modules a bit earlier.

I personally don't use the standalone because I just like convenience. If Starcraft 2 was on steam, I'd buy it there and play through steam instead of Battle.net if I could. If I switch hard drives, I can migrate my steam downloads with a simple cut and paste, rather than redownloading and installing 300+ games one by one.

The reality though, is that no one should ever for any reason whatsoever care about how people launch DCS. Use the standalone, use steam, launch it through a linux terminal if you want. All the circlejerking that happens over whether or not people use the standalone (especially on the subreddit) is stupid and a waste of a potentially good discussion on something else, like why the BF-109 was the premiere aircraft of it's time.

ya about that download speed, I had 27 megabits a second off EDs installer and off of steam I get 13...... although for most steam probably serves it just as fast if not faster depending on the ISP and location.

P2P swarming ftw.

I have both versions but since Steam stopped accepting keys from Ed it is becoming harder to keep it up to date with the standalone version. I may buy the new map on Steam just so I can have it on both versions for 1 purchase but after that I'm going all standalone to support Ed.

As for isp blocking p2p..get yourself a good VPN service they are like 4 bucks a month and your isp won't have a clue as to what you are downloading or doing on line and neither will the NSA... Maybe

But yeah I'm sure lots of peaple don't know but the people that are into study sims are pretty knowledgable and they are no brainers to setup these days. Download small app, log in, click connect, check start at startup. DONE
The one I use even takes anonymous payments and doesn't associate your name with any account. They take your privacy seriously, sadly most people dont seem to care that the Governemnt is looking at their ♥♥♥♥ pics. :)

I use steam because I get better speed and stability for whatever reason in DCS. Other people get better speed and stability through the standalone. Use whatever works for you. There is no right or wrong answer.

Hello there

I have a module or two which I cannot migrate over as I missed the window, but now I shall stick to Steam as it's where the majority of my games/work reside.

I dont mind the wait for new modules to arrive.

For me, Steam isnt the beast many make it out to be.

What it is, for me, is convienient.

Not saying that I am correct or the source of all info, I can only speak for myself.

I use steam because I get better speed and stability for whatever reason in DCS. Other people get better speed and stability through the standalone. Use whatever works for you. There is no right or wrong answer.

Well some do even if it's a flight sim forum because Mr. Short memory we were talking about p2p being blocked for downloads of a Flight Sim you may have heard of.

And since I at least care your NOBODY statement is incorrect. :/

It's really no more convienient than the standalone IMO. Its stuill just an icon you click on, it can check of and apply updates everytime you fire it up, you can add it to Steam and you won't even notice. The only difference IMO is Steam is getting a good bite of ED and the modules devs $$. Personally I'll support the devs. This is a small enough market that I can't see the benifit of giving Steam 30% just for them to store it on their servers.


I say support the devs in this niche market we love, ditch steam version.

I was going to buy the new NTTR map on Steam but I just talked myself out of that and preordered on ED's Site. :)

Oh well nuff said, in the end it your choice on who you support, Steam or the Devs?
