NEED HELP: Can't Run on Windows 8.1
The title pretty much sums up my problem. Whenever I enter the game itself (not the title screen), it just lags up and crashes. I've tried to turn off HDR/Bloom and delete my .ini files, but that was to no avail. I currently am running Windows 8.1 with a GTX 750ti GPU. Any and all help is appreciated. :D

I have 8.1 and it seems to run fine for me, so i doubt the windows version is the issue.

Yeah, I'm assuming it's just my graphics card. Probably to new...

After 10 seconds of Googling I came up with this:

Editing oblivion.ini
Go to the folder c:/users/<username>/my documents/my games/oblivion and open up oblivion.ini search for one of these lines. bSoundEnabled=1, bMusicEnabled=1 or bUseJoystick=1 change the values to 0 (zero) and save it. This happens to fix the game for some people but they might endup without any sound. So please update your sound drivers.

Use this if you crash when pressing "new game"

Guess you could reverse the edits after the game starts, if it does?

Well, I got the game running smoothly with maxed out graphics and sound, however, if I try to enable both the sound and music at the same time from the .ini file, the game lags and crashes. I'm not sure how to update my sound drivers in Windows 8.1 (I'm assuming that the article that you pasted was created back in the XP/Vista era). I don't know how I'll be able to get music, but I guess it's good enough. :/ Thanks for the help, though!

Damn how I miss that soundtrack, though. :'(

Do you have a soundcard?

Hmm...take a look at this as well:

It's not exactly what's happening to you but I suspect the cause is similar.

Yes, I do have a soundcard. It's going to take me awhile to figure the problem out, so I may not even worry about it. :/

I've heard that people usually have issues playing Oblivion with their soundcards, you could try disabling it? Can you switch to another sound adapter?
