My Mage is Free... of the short sword.
Started a pure mage character but with a major in short swords since i was worried about no magic regeneration. And indeed it became a problem. At first it wasn't too bad, I would do some adventuring during the day, come back to Balmora and do some alchemy and then go to bed early and recharge. But then I started exploring more around Caldera and with all the hostile creatures I was forced to pull out my short sword more and more and was leveling it up way more than my magic.

But now I've finally broken free. I've discovered what ingredients restore magicka and also a vendor that continually restocks them. After finally purchasing my Grandmaster mortar and pestle I spent some serious cash on ingredients and with the ones I saved I now have 62 fortify magicka and 70 restore magicka potions. Plus a vendor that restocks the ingredients I need. Feels good.

At first I thought the designers were crazy not having magic regeneration but now I see that with a little effort and perseverance it's entirely workable without it, like most everything else in this game.

Morrowind is so refreshing in that it makes things difficult but when you overcome them it's a very satisfying feeling. Even finding a location or completing a simple quest becomes satisfying when you do it yourself instead of following a quest marker. I still remember the simple quest of having to return a note and a pipe to Tsiya in Balmora because I was forced to find him myself instead of just following a quest marker like in Skyrim.

Anyway, I'm just really loving this game and it's such a breath of fresh, old school RPG air after coming from Skyrim. That game was so generic and easy it was depressing. The fact that during battle you could pause and drink as many healing potions as you want and be instantly healed was just pathetic. I also had so much gold so early on but with nothing to spend it on. There was also no point in dungeon crawling (other than the joy? of completing yet another generic fetch quest) because the loot was all generic junk. I hate that game for so many reasons.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it. I have the MGSO mod pack installed so it looks really good too.

the MGSO is a must, i cant bring myself to play without it.
and yes, skyrim was such a disapointment. sure it was pretty and it played smooth, but the quality of story, the immersion, and the ammount of content that morrowind and oblivion had were sorely lacking.

that being said, i wish they would port Daggerfall into the Skyrim engine. that game was amazing.

Yes, mages are fun to play. Pure mages are really fun and can be a challenge early on.

void/frost salts from alchemist in balmora + comberries from bushes = win
Also if you check around Solstheim (expansion, island far north-west) you will find 2 types of Belladonna berries, normal, and unripened.

They have exactly the same effects, and WILL combine with each other giving you a super awesome magic potion with resist, restore, and fortify magicka (all in the same pot, yummy)

It's worth mentioning that it does also have drain magicka in it, but with your good equipment and decent alchemy skill, you may as well pretend you didn't even read this bit lol

That's fine. But it's the de facto definition of Stockholm Syndrome. You're beholden to an archaic and downright stupid mechanic and forced to arbitrarily compensate, overcoming which obstacle makes you *think* you're 'free' and 'feeling good.'
But then you still need more mana pots.

What's next, bows that don't need arrows? Its purely a design decision. I haven't played much morrowind yet, but saying that non-regeneration magic is bad is a personal preference. I kinda like that after a battle I need go to the nearest friendly bed and recover. Makes perfect sense, I just got stabbed, shot, fireballed, etc. and fought back with soul energy. I would want a nap.
