Choosing the right Nvidia driver

Hi,
I have fairly old computer. Dell Ispiron 530 with 1GB of RAM and a Nvidia 8600 GeForce GT and Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. I'm not technically skilled at all so I was wondering if this is good enough to run a game like Proteus which seems impossible after so many tries.

I used to use an Ubuntu Gallium Driver and was able to play Guacamelee just fine, but when I switched to an Nvidia 331 driver my system became really slow. I just would like clarification if my tech secs are not good enough to run these types of games so I can stop trying to or if there's another graphics card driver that would help run these games. The computer sounds very old! You could upgrade your GPU, but the problem is that your computer hardware might not be able to handle it. Later Nvidia GPUs consume more power than earlier ones so you want to consider buying either a new PC or building your own; or be prepared to revamp your PC in which case you might as well build your own. :-P Am surprised it's survived all this time though, my Dell PC long ago had worse.

Yeah that's what I thought. I'm going to look into building my own pc, but it's going to take a while since I'm a college student and broke lol.

Try and downgrade the nvidia driver. Your system should not be running slow. Also consider changing your window manager to something like xfce or lxde which are more light weight. I've got an old quad core and 9800gt and my system flies. lack of free memory can also slow down your system, so keep that in mind.
