[Dup] Pulse audio
For me I dont like to use pulse audio but in oreder to get steam to run I needed to install pulse ( the 32bit libs since I'm on Gentoo amd64) on my system. I think pulse should be a choice not a requirement.

I running Steam and TF2 with pure Alsa under Arch. Just switch SDL to Alsa backend:
Look here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Steam#No_audio

Does your microphone work in game without pulseaudio? Mine doesn't.

Hmmm.. I'll try to take in mind such a clue, because neither I managed to get sound without pulseaudio.

I had sound without pulse since before I posted this SDL_AUDIODRIVER="alsa" was already set. the problem was that I couldn't start steam without installing pulse since its one of it's dependencies.

I asked about it earlier =)
I agree with you, TF2 needs to check settings and use alsa as sdl audiodriver

Guys, you all say 'installing pulseaudio the 32bit libs' but which packages exactly? P.S. I am running Fedora 18 x86_64
