Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Highly mobile linux (and Games)
Wow I digressed a ton before I even got my question out. My original post is below. But what do you guys think of a future where you carry your OS/games on a portable HD and just plug and play on hardware that is around?

So I am currently not in the BETA but would love to talk to some other linux users regarding mobile gaming platforms. I have a USB 3 hard drive that I have Mint Maya installed on and steam w/wine setup. Well actually several steam instances with several wine instances. So far I have been able to take this platform and boot on anything with an Nvidia GPU and play all my titles fine (great even) so far I have working l4d2, FalloutNV, Boishock1&2, deadspace 1&2. My next focus is going to be more multiplayer games. Does anyone have any suggestions? I get a lot of my wine config ideas from PoL and then just do it myself so I can do minor tweaks myself as needed.

Also I am working on a script to detect (Grep) video hardware and swap to the correct driver files/ and .conf files durring boot. I found someone elses script that did the same thing but only swapped the conf file for X between one for nvidia and ATI/AMD. He declared it a failure since they each install conflicting open GPL. I realized just have the script go a couple steps further and swap the libraries at the same time.

Oh yeah I am adding a third option on that auto detect. If it fails to return an Nvidia or ATI/AMD card I am going to have it drop back to the generic driver.

The thing that gets me excited about platform agnostic gaming and Steam is that I can buy my game once, and play it on the PC, my Android phone, PS3, anywhere. That is how game buying should be. (I'm patiently holding out on buying Plants vs Zombies for Android, hoping Valve will open up a "gaming market" for Android. Linux today, Android tomorrow, I guess.)

I think this is the edge that steam has over the windows marketplace. In the marketplace you are buying something for windows. I also believe it ties it to the windows install you buy it on for licensing reasons. When I buy on steam i can go to any computer and I have it.
