Steam client broken on linux?
Since yesterday 15th august 2013 Steam won't start on my Ubuntu 12.04 machine. I noticed an update just before. Was working fine for many months (with the exception of the other time they broke the steam client on linux...) How can I fix this?

I noticed the directory changed from "/home/yourname./share/Steam" to just "/home/yourname./Steam" with no links on ./share

I've been out of Linux for a couple of months so I don't know if this change happened this week or not.

open the terminal and type steam
reblut@arcane:~$ steam
/usr/bin/steam: line 191: /home/reblut/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: Success
Are you still having problems? I experienced crashes too a couple of days ago, it would start up, show the store page for about half a second and then segfault, this happened several times over, bur eventually it looked like it had managed to download an update and applied it, crashed a few more times, but then worked again.
I fixed it by uninstall it from ubuntu software center, then I hard deleted the steam folder in /home/user/.local/share. Reinstalled Steam from the software center, then everything went back to normal. I had to redownload the whole team fortress 2 game though :(

Steam offers a good tool to backup game data. Do that, it's very helpful.

Do Steam is installed on ./share/local/steam on Ubuntu?

There has been an option to re-install the Steam system files without the need to wipe your Steam directory (and the games you have downloaded) since near the beginning of the year.

For future reference in a console, type:
steam --reset
