Steam on crouton ubuntu on chromebook
Will Steam linux games work on an Acer C7 chromebook with Ubuntu 12.04 running under ChromeOS (crouton)? I have the Orange Box installed and running, but the screen is almost completely black. 1.1 MHz processor with 2 gb RAM, 320gb hard drive.
Will it help to add memory?
Thanks.

1.1Mhz processor.
That would mean Ubuntu would take about 10 years to boot.

Please post your system info. (If you don't know how to do this, open the Steam client and open 'System Information' in the 'Help' drop down)

No, chromebooks have arm processors, which are not supported by Valve. You can't even install it.

Nope the Acer Chromebook has a crappy x86 Celeron with the slowest iGPU you can think of. It might just barely be able to run Super Tux Kart.

Chromebooks are like the name implies machines designed to run a browser and nothing more. So it's obvious that there won't be any real 3D performance.

perhaps worth trying to update your intel gfx driver:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Thanks much! The updates make the video pretty good. But I don't have audio. Should I remove pulseaudio?
kchance 4 Agu 2013 @ 6:26pm
Audio and video now working great. Thanks. Got rid of pulseaudio and rebooted.

Can you get your orangebox games working now? What DE are you using?
It'd be cool to have some framerates.
kchance 5 Agu 2013 @ 4:28pm
yes, it is working. I am using xfce. How do you find out what the feamerates are?
Ashley 5 Agu 2013 @ 6:11pm
Go to options, and under the keyboard tab click advanced, check "enable developer console," hit apply.
Then press ~, and in the box that comes up (should be labeled as Console) put cl_showfps 2, play for a little while and watch the framerate. Tell us what you think it averaged, how high it got, and the lowest.
kchance 8 Agu 2013 @ 4:25pm
Got it. low = 27 fps, high = 59, average = somewhere in 40's.
How does this sound? CPU gets really hot. Would adding RAM help? I now have 2 gb ram.

Ashley 8 Agu 2013 @ 4:55pm
More RAM couldn't help the CPU heating, that performance is really good considering your processor.
Shark 9 Agu 2013 @ 3:34am
adding faster ram increases cpu heat, adding more does nothing if swap is not in use. Unless you don't have swap, then it's hard to tell if you need more ram I guess.

I wanted to type up a quick tutorial for anyone wishing to get Steam to work on a Chromebook. I'm currently using an Acer C7. I installed Ubuntu through Crouton.

Step one: Install Ubuntu
Tutorial: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-install-linux-on-a-chromebook-and-unlock-its-ful-509039343

Step two: Install Steam
Tutorial: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3079875 OR install through the Ubuntu Software Center

Step three: Update gfx to avoid error in Steam

Have fun!

In my experience so far Day of Defeat: Source runs perfectly for me. It's probably not the best looking, nor the smoothest, but it works great for my game play. So, if you own a Chromebook and want to run and play through Steam, it's entirely possible, and rather easy.

So, can you test working of Dota 2 for me?
