Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Linux steamcmd, Invalid Platform
Hey Everybody,

I was wondering if maybe there is a way to solve this problem I have.
Basically I have a linux server on which I host a bunch of gameservers for friends of mine.

In the past I already hosted an Arma 2 server, but it was a pain keeping it up to date as well as uploading the files.
I recently had to get a new harddisk, which meant I lost all the Arma 2 files from the server.
Since my home upload speed is just not enough to transmit the large amount of files that the ARMA 2 server needs, I figured I could use steam to download the files I need for hosting (the maps and the vehicles and all that).
I tried starting Steam in various forms, (Wine, PlayOnLinux, Linux Native) but I could never get any of it to work since I can only run it via VNC, therefore without openGL.

I found out about steamcmd, which seems to be exactly what I want, yet there is one problem.
When I try to download ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead (APP_ID: 33930) it tells me:
ERROR! Failed to install app '33930' (Invalid platform).
I assume this is because it doesn't know how to install ARMA 2 on linux.

Is there any way I can force steamcmd to just download the files I need without bothering to install them? That way I can keep my dedicated servers on Linux running and up to date much easier and faster than if I had to do it manually.

Thanks for reading all that,
Wookimonsta

You can only do this with wine and steam for windows.

Well thats very unfortunate.
Is it possible that this will be updated in a future version of steamcmd? A simple force download option?

There are some threads around with the same question, but there is still no feature like this in steam. So using wine is the only way at the moment.

Well, i managed it by setting up a virtual machine and then running steam there, but it seems a bit silly.

I know this is super old, but for those who don't know, there is the option: "+@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows"
