[Issue Report] Steam for Linux crazy slow
Did anyone noticed slowdowns on Steam for Linux? It takes literally 20 - 30 seconds to load a page like Community, while it's pretty much instant if I use my browser at exactly same time.

Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04.
My connection is superB, very stable and fast (60Mbit, no packet loss on my or my ISPs end, tested with MTR).

Github report here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/1996

Actually, I was experiencing virtually identically slow load times in Windows, if I recall correctly. May not be a "bug", definitely an issue, of course.

Well, I installed Windows 8 yesterday to test few things (there is an Devs Evaluation kit at MSDN) and I had no such slowdowns there :/

I have those "slowdowns" in the steam client on linux and windows, and both are loading fast in browser. So id guess its more a general steam client problem then a linux specific one

I thought it was a Linux problem as well

But while recently booting under Windows to play some Windows-only games I noticed that the Steam Client was equally slow to load pages there.

Same here, but I think that it's caused by my internet connection. I have similar slowdowns in Firefox as well.

EDIT: Ok, maybe not too much in Firefox like in the Steam client, but anyway, my internet connection have sometime an annoying slowdowns.

Well, I would count it as a general Steam Client issue, even if it is worse in Linux. To get it fixed for everyone. Personally I think its just that Steam's browser engine is slow. xD

Do you have any browser plugins installed in your Steam install for use with the Steam browser, like flash? If so, remove them and see if the issue remains.

Nah, only flash I got is Pepper one in Google Chrome, Steam doesn't see it anyway.

I couldn't say why exactly, but after I applied the "flash fix" earlier today, seen here http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/864958451629025044/?l=english

Steam's browser is loading as fast if not faster than Google Chrome is.

I didn't actually test it until I had restarted my computer, but yeah. There is some debate as to whether steam automatically obtains the latest version, but I have, if memory serves, had to install a special version of flash for steam years ago, and it was definitely not based on the latest version, so yeah..

Hope it helps,
Regards,

Not experiencing a slow down at all in Ubuntu 13.04.

I was waiting a bit before confirming it but it doesn't seem to be slow anymore for me too, since (I think) the last Steam update

Hmmm... seems fine now, cool :)
I'm of the opinion that they should just make Steam a GTK app.

And what it has to do with issue from this thread? We don't know what was the cause of slowdowns anyway.
