Additionally, many people who have had Linux for years might only play tf2 rarely, they are bigger supporters than 60% of the newly grown, real Linux community, and they might not get it.
The main point however, is that regular TF2 players aren't the majority of the Linux community, and maybe not even the Steam for Linux community. But the Tux's are isolated to TF2. So it's not really representatives of the support base's size. Besides which, the people who don't really use Linux are likely to end up advertising Linux with the Tux's more anyway, so it doesn't hurt the community.
It is a reward, but it's purely aesthetic, it's not worth enough to worry about it That much.
The "I cheated for a Tux" hack is a much bigger issue, for multiple reasons, among which, the poor fools could quite well be making their computers vulnerable to malware, and it is a bug exploit, rather than a cheap run, installing Linux is pretty difficult, and, as I heard recently, should not be done on a time limit, I really don't blame people for using live CDs, many of them may have already tried to actually install Linux legitimately and used the CDs as a last resort.
I can agree to a cheater's lament type scenario, with say, an upgrade to the Tux awarded to users who play for 24+ hours on Linux, which would only be available if you already had the Tux, but the upgrade should remain available beyond the (already passed) deadline.
Also, another option - Tux can be used only for those, who is playing on Linux OS.
I wouldn't worry at all, I don't care so much about TF2 items. Point is that some of us supported this (keyword here) commercial project which we gain nothing from. If you contribute to open source project, you gain satisfaction that you've been part of something cool, perhaps got your name in About or Credits. Here we are CUSTOMERS who are actually spending our own time reporting bugs, suggesting features and what we get in exchange? Nothing. Because if not for us, Valve would have to hire QA staff anyway to make Steam for Linux usable.
+1
Edit: I didn't even see the end of that post you posted until now.
Camila. If you are only supporting the Linux community to 1-up everybody else. You're support wasn't real to begin with. It is just as bad if not worse, than using Linux /just/ long enough to get the Tux. -_-
I've installed/re-installed almost 100 times 3 different distros = openSUSE, Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
People download an .exe and there you go, Tux on their inventory without even having played on Linux.
They aren't /really/ cheating. And the Tux is more of an advert than a reward, IMO.
Besides which, you are basically saying that you are tempted to un-install Linux if people who had an easier time than you get "your" Tux. -.-
And people are NOT cheating? Really? Windows users run a .exe and Tux magically appears on their inventory without the need to run Linux is not cheating? YEAH!! RIGHT! =)
