Community marketing initiative, anyone?

People in TF2 I encountered today didn't really know about Linux all that much (the fact it has different distros, different desktops, different ways of installing it, etc)...

I'd like to encourage people to make videos explaining all these facts. If you can, explain it to them like they are 12 or younger (because many of them are, granted their parents gave Valve permission, as per American law :P) that would be nice.

You can also choose to only explain Ubuntu+Unity (and maybe Wubi), since most people use that anyway and find it easy to use and install. Or you can explain how to install your own setup. People will be searching for different things.

Stick it on Youtube, stick it on Steam, explain in major foreign languages (Portuguese/French/German/Chinese/Russian/Korean) if you are better at it than English, so that we get as much coverage as possible. Remember to imagine yourself in their shoes.

I'll do one myself later on when I have time.

Doing this will increase the size of the Linux community on Steam, and thus increase the market Linux has, which will prompt publishers to think of us more. So we get more games! :D

There are so many websites, videos, articles, etc dedicated to exactly what you're talking about. People need to do a little more research.

Yeah, but many of these are filled with jargon many kids wouldn't understand (unless they are, you know... me). In the past, it would only be those who are technically minded enough to even consider another operating system who would switch.

Now, it's a load of kids who like video games, asking "oooh, what's that? Oh, that thing has numbers on it."

I'm also aware of many adults who simply haven't had the time in the past to take a look at other operating systems, or even look inside their computers.... or even C:/Windows. It is all these people now that need helping out, that were not in the target audience before. Many of these sites (that I have used in the past, a LOT) are not catered to the people I'm talking about.

Many of them are filled with jargon, but many of them are not. I just DuckDuckGo-ed (search engine that doesn't spy on you) "linux for beginners" and got thousands of useful links. These Windows users are used to doing everything one way and don't want to take the time to learn something new. Now, if some of them DO want to learn, and not just install Linux, get their stupid penguin, then ditch it and go back to Windows, then I'll be more than happy to help them.

Looks like the scene changed since I started out. :P

I have another idea. A constantly updated collection of [links to] guides on how to current Linux platforms up and running, in addition to snippets or links to Steam-specific problems. One person could probably do that, it wouldn't be such a major effort. Or people could collaborate on a wiki. But I'm gonna go to bed. I might start tomorrow :)
