Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux will not open
Just installed and updated the latest version of Ubuntu. Tried to install Steam and it seemed to work just fine. But once the install is over I get an icon with a question mark on my application toolbar. If I right click it I can see the usual Steam options like "Store", "Friends", and whatnot

However, it never actually opens. I can click on it and the icon will kind of glow on and off for a few seconds and stop. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling. I uninstalled through terminal as well as deleted the .steam folder in my home directory. Any other ideas?

Steam is supported only on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and is recommended to use the 32-bit version. It is possible to run it on Ubuntu 12.10, but it doesn't run properly in some cases.

Do you have all the 32-bit libraries if running on a 64-bit install?

Well surprisingly I rebooted and tried again for the fourth time and it worked.
Not really sure what was causing it to hang up but all is well now

If it happens again, try launching it by terminal typing "steam" and paste the output here

sudo apt-get install libc6-i386
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

You must wait for the "Run Steam BEta" message to appear, even myself got tricked sometimes. Remove and install again, this time (if you didn't) wait for the install to fully complete and when the Window saing "Start Steam Beta" appear you click it

Well what happened first was it showed Steam downloading the update files after it installed. Then the download box went away randomly so I assume that steam was just never fully updated.

But once I uninstalled/deleted the .steam folder and rebooted it downloaded the files again and finished

I'm having the same problem with Steam not wanting to open. This is what I got in the terminal:

If you haven't already done this, check the driver stuff for your card: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valve
