Steam Linux Closed Beta to Open Beta [Fixed]
In December I installed The Steam Linux Closed Beta through some sketchy I'm-not-actually-in-the-beta method. It didn't work of course: "This Version of Steam is not Authorized, etc..." But now I can't transition to the open beta. I remove steam via dpkg --purge and search for any files related to steam, find none, I'm purged, right? No. When I install the open beta from the newest installer on http://store.steampowered.com/about/ I get the same message. Any suggestions?

[edit]
I also tried removing the ~/.steam directory after uninstalling. Nope.

[edit 2]
I reinstalled steam using dpkg and manually installing the dependencies rather than using the Ubuntu Software center, and it works now. Thanks for everyone's advice!

Can you detail the sketchy method you used? I can't even begin to imagine where the issue is without knowing what you did (assuming you didn't miss a Steam directory).

If by "sketchy method" you mean the same method everybody (including myself) used who wasn't in the closed beta, then that's really strange because it updated for all of us...
there's actually more files than just ~/.steam (they were created after some update)
I'm guessing your linux skills were only good enough to bypass the closed beta...

Open a terminal and paste in steam://open/games then run the update, see if this does it.

It was several weeks ago, and I can't find it in my browser history. I vaguely remember adding a launchpad repo, but if I did it's not currently on my machine.

Doing that in terminal or chrome didn't work, but I went to store.steampowered.com and hit play on world of goo, and it launched and everything. Problem is, the mouse click events are ~300 pixels to the left of where the actual cursor is, and steam still doesn't auto update (presumably because I'm running the latest version already). And I still can't launch it the normal way.

I'd assume that they would be stored in many many places, however, I couldn't find anything specifically named steam, and my browsing around in likely folders yielded nothing of notice. If you happen to know of any of these files, as you seem to imply, I'd like to know. I'm hoping that this is stored client-side and is something I can fix, and I'm not just permanently marked as a leper in some Valve database somewhere...
