I have installed all the updates offered by ubuntu, my gpu is a radeon hd 7850 (I just build this computer, temporarily using linux) and the drivers i am using are the default ones, but any other drivers i install cause incorrect monitor resolution and an error message, "AMD unsupported hardware". the default ones have correct resolution and do not give me any graphics errors, except maybe this?

have you try the catalyst 12.11 beta-11 ?

Following this guide I successfully installed the driver, but to no avail. My monitor resolution went down a lot and the taskbar was gone, just like every other driver i've tried. As Heavy once said:"NOT BIG SURPRISE"

Edit: also, I had to run
sudo apt-get remove flgrx

for this os to even be usable.

And another thing. Running games like Minecraft or even simple flash games are running very slow... shouldn't this 7850 be plowing through them easily? Is it possible that Ubuntu is using the onboard on my motherboard?

Just trying to set this up now, same problem as OP right down to the very same card.
The Binding of Isaac also runs pretty badly considering the GPU, whereas under Windows 7 I can run The Witcher 2 on high settings at 60fps.

The situation with the monitors is backward for me; my res refuses to go over 1024x768 on one monitor with the default driver, though they both work fine with Catalyst 13.1 installed to X.

if you enable all updates in your software sources(experimentals, backported, proposed, etc) there should be an fglrx "experimental" latest driver "officially" from ubuntu. Try installing that...
