What distro are you using? Have you gave yourself premissions already?

ubuntu 12.04, not sure how would i check?
matt 3. jan. 2013 kl. 21:47
How did you install Steam? Do you have multiple users at your Ubuntu install?
Citizen33 4. jan. 2013 kl. 7:18
msw1 - i've been using sudo steam is there another one i should use or can try? yes i have uninstalled & re-installed multiple times still get same result.
i tried running it with terminal because when i try to run it using the icon nothing happens also when i click the [start steam beta] button after install nothing seems to happen either.

gutigen 0 - i used the client install through ubuntu software center from the link on steams site. also tried doing the manual install through terminal.

It obviously is a permission problem. Can you do other sudo commands?
Citizen33 4. jan. 2013 kl. 7:32
i'm not entirely sure on what you mean by other sudo commands? as in run other none steam related commands as sudo? yes i have run lots of other commands as sudo sense this error and had no problem. how would i go about fixing permissions?
Toquita 4. jan. 2013 kl. 7:43
Just noticed you're using ubuntu. Ubuntu automatcally gives you permissions, but I think you're not the only user in your machine?
Citizen33 4. jan. 2013 kl. 7:49
sense i installed my current ubuntu i've never created or used any other account on it there is none that show up on login or under settings > user accounts.

if sudo dosent work, try:
sudo bash
then run your comand

Does the files have proper access permissions and ownership? If no, it might be a package problem.
matt 4. jan. 2013 kl. 9:56
Go to /home/yourname/.local/share (ctrl+h reveals hidden files), rightclick Steam and check permissions tab. Is it set that you can create and delete files and in what user group it belongs to?

Sometimes if there's a kernel update you need to restart. Happened with totem player.
