Installing on 32 bit Linux Mint Debian Edition
I am running the 32bit LMDE and would like to install steam. Has anyone had luck with that? If so, what steps did you take to do it?

I am running Mint 14 Cinnimon 64bit. and it runs awesome.. except for having to reset my screen setup after I exit the game.

That's great, but it doesn't help me.

I would assume, it would work the same since the steam client is 32bit only

...

Other users running both Ubuntu and Debian based OSes have have been able to get it working. Instead of waiting for the 'luck' of another user running the same variant as you, why not just try it?

Since you're on 32-bit steam shouldn't require anything other than the proper video drivers to install.

I guess I should have mentioned that I have tried it and am having dependency issues and that's why I'm asking if others have been able to install it on 32bit LMDE. I wouldn't be asking if I hadn't already tried to install it.

I just got in to the beta on the most recent round. I'm trying to get the install on a vanilla LMDE 64-bit, which appears that it could be an uphill battle : ) But I can always switch back. What dependencies are you seeing?

All info you need is in that thread:

Be sure that you installed your gfx drivers the correct way and use my script as root+user.

Hi,

@Ironlenny
I am running lmde 32-bits also and this is not so simple...
I found this on reddit:
"Looks like the outdated libc is. I guess the necessary steps are: * Pull new kernel from debian-experimental and recompile * Once booted into new kernel, pull new glibc * Modify steam to use libjpeg instead of libjpeg-turbo

I think I'll wait now that I have it up and running on Ubuntu and go back to LMDE once things are fixed."

from source

Since I don't want to have such headache to upgrade, I think I'll try either with debian or LUbuntu.

@Routhinator
Do you know if it works with debian? The problem here is that libc6 version is too old in dependencies. So even by modifying dependencies in deb package, I got version error at launch:
/lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found
And I thought that LMDE was based on the same depos as debian since it was rolling...

@fly13
Kano's link worked for me. Just use the second two debian scripts, not the first one.

OK, thanks.
Since there was no answer, I supposed that it didn't work...
But it's too late, I already migrated to LUbuntu, worked like a charm ;). And it's really fast also, I am quite impressed. So bad it is not a rolling revision :(.

Why are people installing 32 bit OSs on their 64 bit hardware?
Very strange...
Fly13DW 2012년 12월 31일 오후 1시 18분
Well, it depends on the computer that you have...
In my case, for a 5 old netbook with 2Go RAM, there's no need to have 64 bit OS...
I amsure I am not the only one in this kind of situation.

While my netbook does have a 64-bit processor, it also has a gig of ram. Unless a program is compiled using the x32 ABI, its going to use 64-bit pointers and 64-bit variables. Not a big deal when you have 4 gigs, but on one it gets a bit cramped. That's why I'm using a 32-bit operating system.

Kano's script worked perfectly for me (the first one once I ran it as root, the second two did nothing noticeable). Running the latest version of LMDE 32-bit.

I do wish the Ubuntu-based Mint users would stop posting that it works fine for them on here though, made it harder to find a useful post. If your Mint install has a version number instead of a date (so Linux Mint 14 rather than LMDE 201204) it isn't relevant to this :)
