Performance boost in KDE

I'm new to KDE and noticed that it was very slow in source games at first. But you can significantly boost it by going to your System settings > Desktop Effects > Advanced > and check "Suspend desktop effects for full screen windows"

I think it's even faster than in Unity

All the major DEs are roughly the same performance-wise at this point. Some may require you to tweak a setting or two to get good full-screen performance. For instance, in XFCE you need to make sure you have their software compositor turned off.

Don't listen to the fanboys. Use the DE you like. Your performance will be determined by your hardware and the available drivers.

Even Unity has good performance now in 13.04, so now it just comes down to what YOU want to run, and thats as it should be in Linux

KDE has a keyboard shortcut for disabling/enabling effects on the fly - alt+shift+f12. I've made it a habit to hit it before I play a game and to hit it again when I'm done.

I tried it and it turned off kwin, but was still much slower than my suggestion. (eventhough it should be the same)

I'm not sure why that would be. I've been using it for a long time and it has always provided me the same performance as disabling effects entirely. The option to suspend effects for full screen windows has never worked for me. I wonder if it is due to twinview.

Surprisingly, for such a big desktop environment with lots of eyecandy, KDE offers you even suprerior performance than lightweight distributions like LXDE and XFCE when you disable the effects. THIS is what I call optimized software.

The kwin developer wrote a blog entry after the 12.10 test about how senseless these benchmarks are even though KDE performed the best. Wouldn't surprise me if that's reflected in the latest benchmarks where it is not known which settings where used ;-)
