L4D 2 Windows vs Linux performance comparison!
Hi guys, I did some tests, and have some numbers for you! :)

Tested on Highest details!

Average FPS on Linux: 55
Average FPS on Windows with Razer Game Booster - ON: 43
Average FPS on Windows with Razer Game Booster - OFF: 24

Linux Mint 14 64 bit - Mate
Windows 7 64 bit

In my opinion this is pretty cool! I never thought that Linux versions will have better performance than windows versions!

Thank you Valve! :)

EDIT:

I have made new test, you can see it here:

Old news but only applies to NVIDIA.

whoah, i tought nvidia has released new drivers for windows who have closely the same perfomance like in Linux. Thats awesome.

Assuming I got my math right, that's almost 30% difference, no?

Thanks for taking the time to test :)

Btw, what's your PC spec? and what's the drivers' versions?

LENOVO G580AH
i5 Ivy Bridge 3210M
NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M
8 GB RAM

using primusrun with drivers nvidia-313

Yes,surprisingly, average FPS is higher, but seems there's no public servers avail., with private server map loading takes quite long.

My experiences on the listen servers haven't been bad at all, to be fair. Certainly, I have not had as much fun with a game in a long time.

Wonder if this boost in FPS is from Linux vs Windows or is it really just OpenGL vs D3D, that has improved the performance

They never mentioned how the version in Mac OSX has better performance than Windows so I have to guess it's partly Linux as well :P

In my opinion the main difference is that linux can manage computing power more efficiently than windows. Maybe i try it on windows without gamebooster. I gues it will be at least 5 FPS down...

How do you measured average FPS on linux?
fiws May 7, 2013 @ 12:51pm
Did u disable Vsync? Because Vsync caps FPS

After this work, Left 4 Dead 2 is running at 315 FPS on Linux. That the Linux version runs faster than the Windows version (270.6) seems a little counter-intuitive, given the greater amount of time we have spent on the Windows version. However, it does speak to the underlying efficiency of the kernel and OpenGL. Interestingly, in the process of working with hardware vendors we also sped up the OpenGL implementation on Windows. Left 4 Dead 2 is now running at 303.4 FPS with that configuration.

So 3.8% faster when both use OGL.

it was 3.8% do to the game capping out was it not?

The article doesn't say anything about Linux reaching the engine limits with 315 FPS.
