FX 5500 only supports OpenGL 2.0. It could be that CS 1.6 has higher OGL requirement than that.

EDIT: http://store.steampowered.com/app/10/

Linux System Requirements

OpenGL 2.1

NVIDIA 8000 series was the first to support that and it's the oldest card still supported by the 310 driver branch. You might get a used one for very little money.

I think that may just be a blanket minimum spec that Valve has applied to all their titles on Linux. The minimum specs they provide seem more inline with that required to play CS:S or TF2, not a GoldSrc game. I know from personal experience that I could run Half-Life via the Linux version of Steam using an ancient Geforce 6200 Turbocache card.

The Nvidia site says that the 6200TC only supports OpenGL 2.0 but it uses the 304 drivers whereas the 5500 uses the 173 drivers. Basically if you want to play a game that uses the original Half-life engine you'll need a Geforce 6xxx card or later, if you want to play a Source game you'll need a Geforce 8xxx or later.

Jup I mixed it up. 8000 series for OpenGL 3.0 (minimum requirement for Source Engine) and 2.1 for Half-Life Classic games. Which is to bad. I have a laptop from 2007 with 6000 series and can't play source games in OpenGL despite Counter-Strike: Source being 2-3 years older than my graphics card. On Direct 3D there would not be a problem. But Valve probably had good reasons to go for OpenGL 3.0 with the Source Engine.
